PHOTO-MANIPULATION: A COMPOSITION WITH YOUR PORTRAIT

You will be creating a composition, which will consist of three manipulated self-portraits of yourself as the main focus. Each portrait will express a different part of your personality; or you can combine several parts of your personality in each. You can use a sheet of 18x24” cardstock paper to arrange your portraits on.

This image was created using an online photo manipulating program called PICNIK.

This image is chosen because it’s a profile which shows how I’m a fairly private person only ever letting others see half of who I truly am. The scene in the background was part of my choice because being connected with nature and going camping is a large part of who I am.

Process:

1) Using your sketchbook, list qualities of your personality

2) Transcribe these into the language of art (line, shape, colour etc.)

3) Use these qualities to transform your portraits into expressive images. (through the variety of tools in both picnik and Photoshop) Think about how you can use materials such as tissue paper, watercolour, acrylic paint, markers, India Ink, magazine clippings etc. in your works to add to the meaning you are trying to put across. Attempt as much as possible to significantly change or alter the pictures (portraits) so that it doesn’t look like the original.

  • In order to help you change your photo you will use an online program called PICNIK ( Sign up for a free account and use the features of the program to make your photo more interesting, and to emphasize some of the characteristics you brainstormed in your sketchbook. It will take some time to play around on the program and figure out the features of it.
  • OR you may use the program Photoshop Elements to manipulate your pictures.
  • Other suggestions once you print out your altered picture are to hide parts of the face or redefine its structure. You might add surface texture.

4) Respond to your images in reflective writing in your sketchbook:

  1. How does your image reflect your personality?
  2. Which image do you think is the most successful and why?

Observations:

It is important for artists to have a continuing communication between themselves and their work. It is sometimes helpful to work on two works at the same time – this often encourages intuitive insights. As you’re working on one work, you might find that a good idea pops into your head for your other work. The best ideas often happen this way.

MIXED MEDIA

THINGS TO CONSIDER:

This project should be created using a mixture of mediums. Mixed Media art is a popular form of art. You may find many examples online. Take a look at what has been done, and question why the artist has chosen to use the media they have. Do some of the materials you’ve seen interest you? Could they enhance your portrait by emphasizing the characteristics you are trying to portray? These are some things you should consider in your CREATIVE PROCESS.
