Newsletter No 45(aka 2016-15) – 25 May 2016

Last weekend…
Well done to Katie Warren, 17th lady home at the Worcester Marathon in a time of 4:12:03.
He’s no longer a club member but remains a friend to many of us, so it’s worth reporting that Steve ‘the Plasterer’ Pretlove completed the IronMan Lanzarote in a time of 16:47:15. It’s not an easy event, as Gareth Crockett and Matt Ryder will recall from their 2013 jaunt but, even so, all I can say is WOW! Nice one Steve!
This weekend…
I’m sure there will be someone doing something somewhere. Like, perhaps, the latest club champs race – the Dauntsey 10k. Good luck to all of you, wherever you are!
RWBSA membership card
Please ensure that you carry your RWBSA membership card with you and present it when buying drinks at the association bar. Failure to do so may result in you being charged the higher non-membership rate for drinks.
If you have not yet collected your card, please contact Vickie Reay. After next week, any membership cards that have not been collected will be left behind the bar for you to collect at your leisure.
Broad Town 5 - Saturday 18th June
We still require lots more help during the afternoon for the BT5 event on 18th June. If you have not already responded regarding your availability, please let Karen Ferris know if you are available to help or use the link provided in her email to confirm.
This is our annual club event and will only be a success if we all pull together as a club in the day.
Please remember to visit the doodle poll to indicate if you are able to help/marshall, hoping to run, or are unable to help.
This event would not be possible without the support of members. We now have over 140 members and only a small fraction have stepped forward to offer help.
Look forward to hearing from you all
Many thanks,
Karen
Vickie and Kate Hwould still likesome first-aid trained folk to turn out for the duration of the race.

Lea 10k
From Arthur Johns:
The Lea 10Km (ish) takes place on Sunday 10th July at 10.30am, starting at the Rose and Crown pub in the village (postcode SN16 9PF, 15 minutes from the club, on the right a mile or so before you reach Malmesbury). As usual it is the 'warm-up' for Musicalea.
A day in Lea starting with a casual run then enjoying an afternoon of music at the pub is a good day. As always we stress that this is not a race but a social run for same charity effort as Musicalea (£5 would be a welcome donation) although some of us who are competitors will always be racing? There will be a bottle of wine for the first male and female as acknowledgement of their runs. Children are welcome accompanied by adults and some cycle round if they promise not to mow down the runners! It is after all a charity day in the village.
Last year we had over forty runners with over 50% villagers. Many of you enjoy the music at the pub (with a few drinks) after. It can be a good day especially when the sun shines. Musicalea kicks off about noon and goes on right into the evening. Lots of unusual and local acts with plenty of food available. Last year we were lucky with friends, partners or those not able to run helping Lyn at the end with recording times and finishers. That would be much appreciated this year. Please let Lyn know if anyone is able to help.
I am attaching an A4 poster (see below!) with details of the event. If you hope to be here then please advise so we have an idea of numbers for the halfway drinks station set up.
Gibbet Hill 10k

Council Grant to Beginners Running Group – by Chairman Rob
Andy Jack, in his capacity as Community Engagement Manager in the Marlborough area for Wiltshire County Council, worked with his counterpart in Royal Wootton Bassett to secure a £760.00 grant from the Royal Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area Board of the Council for the Beginners Running Group. The award was confirmed last Wednesday (May 18) at a meeting of the Area Board that myself and Andy both attended. The Area Board are keen to promote wellbeing and healthy lifestyles in the community and recognise the contribution that running can make to this worthy objective.
The purpose of the grant is to fund 4 club members through the England Athletics ‘Leader in Running Fitness (LIRF)’ course that will enable the members to coach the Beginners Group and fund 20 new starters referred to the Beginners Group by General Practitioners in the Royal Wootton Bassett Area.
On behalf of the Club, I would like to extend our thanks to Andy for his hard work in steering the grant application through the funding process. I would also like to thank Alexa Smith, Andy’s counterpart in Royal Wootton Bassett along with Councillor Alison Bucknell and her Area Board Team for considering the application.
The award also recognises the contribution the Club makes to the wider community. Club members’ involvement in the recent Lungbuster event, the Mayor’s Race and the ‘Clean for the Queen’ morning has not gone unnoticed and we can all take pride in our combined contribution.
Members wishing to become involved with the Beginners Group need only approach Nigel Barber (Lead Beginners Group Coach) either informally during a run night or send Nigel an e-mail.
Once again – our thanks to Andy!
Beginners Group Team (Nigel Barber, John Matthews, Dennis Bird, Paul Salmon, Sonia Bird Tribley, Rob Davies)
John Orton (Marathon Man)
John Orton is an avid collector of stats and according to his running diaries is set to complete 30,000 miles since Jan 1991 in June this year. That is not bad for a man who at the start of the year was going to retire from running due to ongoing injuries. Maybe a name change is in order - how about John Lazarus Orton or Forrest Gump?
Wonder if anyone can beat that. I know I can't.
Dave Roper
Finally….
My thanks to this week’s contributors. Until next time….
