Theraplay Level 1 & Group Training

6 March to 10 March 2017 (inclusive)

  • Description

Theraplay is a short-term, therapist-guided play therapy for children and their parents/care giversthat enhances attachment, self-esteem and trust in others through joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of healthy interaction between parent and child. It focuses on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Nurture, Engagement and Challenge.

This creates an active and empathetic connection between child and parents. This training results in a changed view of the self as worthy and lovable, and of relationships as positive and rewarding. The MIM is a structured technique for observing and assessing the interaction between caregivers and child. The MIM consists of a series of simple tasks which the caregivers and child perform together. It is used to evaluate the caregivers’ capacity for Structure, Nurture, Engagement and Challenge, the child’s response to a caregiver, and is a valuable tool in planning treatment and determining how to help families strengthen their relationships. Group Theraplay is an adaptation of Theraplay for settings in which the therapist or other professionals work with groups of children or with groups of parents and children.

This course will provide:

  • Both the MIM and the Group Theraplay training.
  • Role-play opportunities to practice Theraplay techniques.
