Lesson Text

Atthe conclusion of this course, you will know what to do to be available for work, what the proper uniform will be, and the procedure for reporting to work.

Being Available for Work.

Working for Greyhound as an extra board operator, you will be assigned to the extra board until you have the seniority to hold a regular assignment. As an extra board operator you are responsible for being ready for work nine hours after completing your last assignment. On the extra board you

could be called any time of the day or night for work. If you are unavailable the next driver will be assigned to report and you will be booked off for 12 hours then placed on the bottom of the extra board list. This is called a miss out and can lead to disciplinary action. Miss out examples includes not responding to VRU calls within 15 minutes and not showing up for work. If you need to book off for any reason, be sure to call OSC to book off before they call your for an assignment. Make sure you receive a conformation number.

Being available for work requires you have a working telephone. You can call the VRU number at any time to check your status on the extra board or you can use the internet by going to to find out what position you are on the board. By viewing the web site you will see where you are on the extra board list and how many known assignments coming up for the rest of the day. When OSC calls and tells you to report in two hours, you must be rested and in compliance with Federal regulations including proper rest, and no consumption of alcohol in the last 8 hours.

Proper Uniform appearance and supplies

Being ready for work also includes proper supplies and uniform. Once you receive a call from OSC you will have about two hours to report to the terminal or garage. Greyhound expects you to be well groomed with appropriate clothing. Greyhounds dress uniform includes: long or short sleeve shirt with tie, pants, coat, hat (optional), and black shoes. You must be clean shaven, hair above your collar, and the only pin on your uniform should be your name plate. Supplies should be packed ahead of time, supplies include: watch, drivers ticket punch, tire tread gauge, E-7 trip envelopes, log book, baggage claims, reboarding passes, ID name tags, and a C-4 loading list. Some optional supplies include: flash light, sun glasses, and an extra uniform.

Reporting for work

Once you arrive at work, call OSC thru the VRU call prompt and report to the dispatcher. The dispatcher will put you on paid protection until you are assigned to a piece of work. Once you are assigned, check with your local Supervisor to receive special instructions then check the drivers’ bulletin board for weather updates or route changes. Inspect your supplies and restock if needed. Locate your bus at the garage or terminal normally on the ready line, properly pre trip your bus and prepare your reports to board passengers. Remember to keep your log book updated to your current status.
