A letter to my students:

Why did you enroll in a chemistry course?

Chemistry is required course for many colleges and universities, but beside that, chemistry deals with matter, and we live in a world of matter. You will learn about the world around you. When you finish this course, you’ll understand how matter behaves. If you pass this class without understanding you and I both have failed.

The following suggestions are meant to help you understand as you use this book.

1- Become an independent learner (you will be on your own), sometimes a good study partner may help.

2-Develop a good study habit (spend at least half an hour of studying every night.)

3-Schedule your study time (in chemistry every chapter is related to each other spend some time to review some of the older materials).

4-Read the new materials from your text before it is discussed in class.

5-Be an active reader. (Chemistry is unlike any other subject, you must read , understand, predict the outcome, learn about symbols, understand charts , tables, and illustration all together).

6-Make sure you know how to solve each problem, copying it from somebody else is not going to help you

7-Do not study a lot of chemistry at one sitting. (Seven days a week, 30 minutes each is sufficient).

8-Cram sessions before a major exam are not effective.

9- Over learn basic skills through practice. Many concepts are needed throughout this course.

10- Be objective. Some students have an unrealistically high opinion of their abilities. When they get poor grades or do not understand what they read, they attribute their lack of success to poorly written test questions or text or my lectures. Other students have an unrealistically low opinion of their abilities. When they get poor scores, they decide, they are stupid and cannot understand chemistry. Usually the problem stems from the use of unfamiliar terms in either the text or the class lecture. The key to success is having faith in God, yourself, organizing your work, and not giving up.

11- Read the instruction regarding safety in the chemistry lab.

12- Remember, I do not know that you understood the materials unless you ask me.
