1HOST ORGANISATION OVERVIEW

UIN Alauddin Makassar is one of the leading educational and research institutes in Sulawesi and Eastern Indonesia. The university has seven Faculties and one Postgraduate Program (PPs)

2ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW

Thewill help to strengthen the university capacity to implement a Research Master Plan through developing a work plan. Work with staff to improve their knowledge management skills, understanding of research methodologies, improving publications and dissemination of research.

3ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES:

  • To help improve quality of research, data and recommendations that can be used by local government to inform policy change that best benefit communities
  • To ensure the inclusion of all people directly affected by the volunteer assignment in the course of your work with the host organisation and host community, including implementing strategies that relate to:
  • promoting gender equality and empowering women,
  • disability inclusion, and
  • child safeguarding

4DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE VOLUNTEER

In consultation with their line manager and relevant stakeholders, Australian volunteers complete a work plan in the first three (3) months of their assignment. The duties below are an indication of the type of work that may be involved in meeting the Assignment Objectives:

  • Improved research capabilities and outcomes
  • Improved quality of data and recommendations that can be used by local government for community development
  • Develop a model to support successful implementation of the Research Master plan
  • Set a strategic target to conduct more research
  • Deliver a workshops or training on the philosophy of research, research epistemology and methodologies

5Selection Criteria

Qualifications, Essential Skills & Experience
  • Master degree in a related area
  • Tertiary qualification in social research, policy research, education or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting research, writing research publications, training and mentoring
  • Proven experience working in a region or in a developing country
Desirable Skills & Experience
  • Experience living/working in South East Asia
  • Indonesian language skills

6ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION

Staff Supervision

The volunteer will work closely with Expert staff of Rector UIN Alauddin Makassar

Working Relationship

The volunteer will be required to build relationships with faculty member/staff to improve their knowledge

Hours & Days of Employment

From 8 am to 5 pm. Monday to Friday.

The expectation is that the volunteer will work the equivalent of a 5 day week to a maximum of 40 hours per week.

Leave Entitlements
  • Same conditions and terms as local colleagues apply, including national holidays. However, as a minimum, volunteers will accrue 12 days of leave
  • Sick leave: No limitation, however if more than a day will need doctor’s certificate.
Other Conditions

The volunteer will be based in the UIN AlauddinRectorate office with a basic workstation and access to a computer, internet, telephone and fax

Language Skills and Level Required

This position required medium level of Bahasa Indonesia ability, or

  • Willingness to learn Bahasa Indonesia Language.
  • Ability to converse about non-technical matters in Bahasa Indonesia

Language support is provided during the in-country orientation period. Most often, additional resources for further development later in the assignment will be available if required

7LIVING AS A VOLUNTEER

The university is located 30 minutes from Makassar city. Makassar is the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, and is the largest city on Sulawesi Island, with a population of over one million. It is a major port city in a central location making it a busy hub with connections to Sumatra, Java, Bali and Kalimantan in the west with Sulawesi, the Moluccas and Papua in the east.

Makassar has several traditional foods. The most famous is Coto Makassar, which is a stew made from a mixture of nuts and spices with beef.

Historically Makassar has always been a dominant trading centre for Eastern Indonesia, with a prominent spice trade and fishing industry. Makassar attractions encompass both traditional and modern, featuring a prominent historical landmark from the 16th century, Fort Rotterdam, and AmirulMukminin, an incredible floating mosque at Losari Beach. Modern attractions include the third largest indoor theme park in the world, Trans Studio Makassar, and the first underground shopping centre in Indonesia: Trans Mahagaya Mall.

There is public transportation available with minibuses called pedi-pedi.Motorcycles are a common means of transport throughout Indonesia. If volunteers wish to ride motorcycles while on assignment it is highly recommended that they are already competent or undertake a learner course in Australia before arriving. A motorcycle license is not required for riding as a passenger (for example on a motorcycle taxi).

Islam is the dominant religion in Makassar, though Christian, Hindu and Buddhist communities are also represented

Indonesia has extremely good and affordable telecommunications systems, especially in the major cities. There are a range of pre-paid telephone networks that support the use of smart phones, and many restaurants, coffee shops, and shopping malls also provide free WI-FI.

8ALLOWANCES & SUPPORT

These allowance levels are based on the Cost of Living in the host country location. Allowanceswill be reviewed periodically and may increase or decrease. Volunteers will be given notice of any change to the allowance level.

AUD 700.00per month

Accommodation Allowance

AUD 300.00per month

Housing
  • Assistance with the identification of suitable, secure and affordable accommodation will be provided by the Host Organisation and In Country Management team
  • The allowance will limit the volunteer to more basic accommodation and applicants should not expect to have many of the electrical appliances they may be used to
  • AVI will advance the Accommodation Allowance for a 12 month period as rent in Indonesia is generally paid 12 months in advance rather than monthly.

  • Re-settlement allowance (assignments longer than 6 months).
