MATHEMATICS - KS4

Grade A*

·  Pupils are able to independently apply complex algebraic techniques to multi step problems and solve complex shape and space problems.

·  They independently apply a wide range of statistical techniques to investigate hypotheses.

·  When solving problems students efficiently develop and present a concise reasoned argument.

Grade A

·  Pupils are able to apply algebraic techniques to a range of problems including problems involving 2D and 3D shapes.

·  They understand histograms and sampling techniques.

·  When solving problems involving a number of variables there is an increased emphasis on mathematical rigour.

Grade B

·  Pupils show understanding of a range of advanced algebraic techniques and understand dimensions of formulae, mathematical similarity and trigonometry.

·  They display a good understanding and use of statistical techniques to compare distributions and handle more complex probability problems.

·  Pupils can view a problem from more than one perspective and use a range of mathematical techniques.

Grade C

·  Pupils demonstrate good algebra skills including quadratics and simultaneous equations and improved problem solving skills.

·  They have a good understanding of shapes, measures and transformations and are beginning to use Pythagoras’ Theorem.

·  They show sound understanding and use of statistical techniques in investigating hypotheses and have a good understanding of probability.

·  Pupils can independently extend a problem.

Grade D

·  Pupils display sound algebra skills and are beginning to choose the most appropriate skill to solve word problems.

·  They show sound understanding of angles, perimeter and area (including circles) and are beginning to perform transformations of shapes.

·  They use more complex statistical techniques and have a sound understanding of probability. Pupils carry through complex problems by breaking them down and they give mathematical justifications of their conclusions

Grade E

·  Pupils have good number skills, including negative numbers, ratio and basic algebra skills. They display a good use of shape, measures and basic angle properties and are able to compare distributions using basic statistics and graphs and are beginning to understand probability.

·  Pupils are beginning to use mathematical symbolism to explain their work and check their results.

Grade F

·  Pupils display a sound use of number including simple fractions and percentages, sound use of shape and measures and basic perimeters and areas and sound understanding of simple graphs.

·  They are able to record and group data and are beginning to use basic statistics.

·  Pupils are beginning to develop their own strategies for solving problems and present their work in a clear and organised way.

Grade G

·  Pupils handle basic number work including times tables, recognise 2D and 3D shapes and have a basic understanding of measures.

·  They produce simple graphs from given data and are beginning to organise and discuss their work and explain their thinking.
