Continue with the instructions for administering the DAT Verbal Reasoning as follows.

Test 1 – Verbal Reasoning

Say: Open your Test Booklet to Verbal Reasoning on page 2. (Demonstrate)

Make sure all candidates have turned to the correct page.

Say: Look at the instructions. Read them to yourself as I read them aloud. “Instructions: Find the space for Verbal Reasoning on your Answer Sheet. You are to mark all of your answers on your Answer Sheet. Do not write in this Test Booklet.”

Check to see that all candidates have located the section labelled Verbal Reasoning on their Answer Sheet.

Say: “This is a test to see how well you can reason with words. Each sentence has two words missing – the first word and the last word. Each answer choice has a pair of words that is related to the words in the sentence in some way. The first word of the pair should fit at the beginning of the sentence so that the first two words in the sentence are related to each other in a certain way. The second word of the pair should fit at the end of the sentence so that the second two words in the sentence are related to each other in the same way as the first two words. When you have chosen the pair that you feel best completes the sentence, mark the letter of that pair on your Answer Sheet.” Are there any questions?

Answer candidates Questions.

Say: Now lets look at Example A. (Pause to allow candidates time to look at the example) “In order to choose the correct answer for Example A, look carefully at each pair of words. Only one pair of words will complete the sentence so that the first two words are related to each other in the same way as the last two words.” Are there any questions?

Answer candidates Questions.

Say: Answer A is wrong because miaow and bark are not related in the same way as cat is related to kitten. Answer C is wrong because although a dog barks and a cat scratches, the actions are not the same type. Answer D is wrong because although a seal barks, cat and kitten are not related in the same way. Answer E is wrong because tree and bark are not related in the same way as cat is related to scratch. The answer is B because dog and bark are related in the same way as cat and miaow. Circle B for example A has been filled in on your Answer Sheet.” Are there any questions?

Answer candidates Questions.

Say: Now look at Example B. (Pause to allow candidates time to look at the example). “In order to choose the correct answer for Example B, look carefully at each pair of words. Which pair of words will complete the sentence so that the first two words are related in the same way as the last two words? (Pause for replies.) The answer is K because left and right are related in the same way as west and east. Left is the opposite of right, and west is the opposite of east. Fill in circle K for Example B on your Answer Sheet.” Are there any questions?

Answer candidates Questions.

Say: Now look at Example C. (Pause to allow candidates time to look at the Examples.) “In order to choose the correct answer for Example C, look carefully at each pair of words. Which pair of words will complete the sentence so that the first two words are related in the same say as the last two words? (Pause for replies.) The answer is D because lead and pencil are related in the same way as ink and pen. The lead of a pencil and the ink of a pen both produce marks on paper. Fill in circle D for Example C on your Answer Sheet.” Are there any questions?

Answer candidates Questions.

Say: “Remember, you are to choose the pair of words that completes the sentence so that the first two words are related to each other in the same way as the last two words. If you have difficulty with a particular problem, leave it and do the ones you find easier. Then, if you have time, go back to the problems on this test you have missed. Do not go on to the next test. Stop and wait for further instructions”. You will have 25 minutes to work on this test. Turn the page. You may start working now.

While candidates are working, walk round the room to see that they are following instructions, completing the correct section of the Answer Sheet, and that they are not looking at any other tests.

After 25 minutes (or sooner, if all have finished),

Say Stop. Put your pencil down now and close your booklet so that the front cover is facing up. Put your Answer Sheet inside the front cover of our booklet..

If you wish to end the testing session here, collect the Test Booklets with the Answer Sheets inside. If testing is to continue, give candidates a brief rest period; then continue with the instructions for administering the next test.

Test 2 – Numerical Reasoning

If you are beginning a new testing session,

Be sure that all desks are cleared and see that each candidate has two soft-lead pencils.

Say: I am going to give you your Test Booklet and Answer Sheet again. Don’t open your booklet or take out your Answer Sheet until I tell you what to do.

Distribute the Test Booklets with the Answer Sheets inside. Check to see that each candidate gets the right booklet and Answer Sheet.

Say: Take out your Answer Sheet and open your booklet to Numerical Reasoning on Page 9. (Demonstrate)

If you are continuing a testing session,

Say: Open your Test Booklet to Numerical Reasoning on Page 9. (Demonstrate)

Make sure all candidates have turned to the correct page.

Say: Look at the instructions. Read them to yourself as I read them aloud. “Instructions: Find the space for Numerical Reasoning on your Answer Sheet. You are to mark all of your answers on your Answer Sheet. Do not write in this Test Booklet.”

Check to see that all candidates have located the Numerical Reasoning section on their Answer Sheets.

Say: “This is a test to see how well you can reason with numbers. Read each problem. If necessary, work out your answer on rough paper. You may not use a calculator. Look at the possible answers listed and decide which answer is best. Then mark the space on your Answer Sheet for the answer you have chosen. Some of the problems have no correct answer listed. If you do not find a correct answer, mark the space for the letter next to None of these, which means that a correct answer is not among the choices given.” Are there any questions?

Answer candidates Questions

Say Now let’s look at Example A. (Pause to allow candidates time to look at the example.) “In Example A, the correct answer is 10 because when you count by 2’s, 10 follows 8 in the counting sequence. Circle B for Example A has been filled in on your Answer Sheet.” Are there any questions?

Answer candidates Questions.

Say: Let’s look at Example B. (Pause to allow candidates time to look at the

example.) “In Example B, the correct answer is 6 because 5P + 2 equals 58, and only 6 can replace the P in this addition example. Since 6 is not listed among the choices given, the answer is None of these. Fill in the circle K for Example B on your Answer Sheet.” Are there any questions about what you are to do?
