Thermodynamics Review (and new!) Topics

Directions: Using Moodle, watch and listen to the following instructional videos, filling in the notes with the lessons.

BRIGHTSTORM SERIES

Video Lesson: What makes a reaction spontaneous?

  1. Define a spontaneous reaction:
  1. Does a spontaneous reaction give us an indication of the kinetics of a reaction?
  1. Write the thermochemical equation for the combustion of methane:
  1. Write the reverse reaction of above:
  1. Write the thermochemical chemical equation for the oxidation of iron.
  1. Write the reserve reaction of above:
  1. Do you notice a correlation?
  1. Are exothermic reactions the only reactions that are spontaneous?
  1. Record the equation that disproves the theory that all reactions must be exothermic to be spontaneous.
  1. What is entropy? And what is its symbol?
  1. Write the formula for the Gibbs Free Energy formula:

Video 2: Enthalpy

  1. Define Enthalpy? And what is its symbol?
  1. Record the equation for calculating the Enthalpy change for a reaction.
  1. Write the thermochemical equation for the formation of iron III oxide (rust).
  1. Write the thermochemical equation for the decomposition of ammonium nitrate.

Video 3: Entropy

  1. Define the term:
  1. Model this definition by drawing (as the instructor does) of the ice cube melting, and then evaporating. What happens to the entropy of the system as the solid turns to a liquid and then a gas?

Video 4: Gibb’s Free Energy Explained

  1. Define this concept as written on the board:
  1. Write the equation from the board and label each variable as the instructor did.
  1. What units must be the same before we do the mathematical equation?
  1. Record the numbers for the enthalpy, entropy and temperature. Show this calculation and demonstrate if Gibbs free energy predicts if the reaction would be spontaneous.
  1. Delta G is negative in ______.
  1. Fill in the grid just as displayed with the instructor. This s so important in predicting spontaneous reactions!
  1. Write the example written on the board, and work it out with the instructor. (found under the box created earlier)

KAHN ACADEMY VIDEO LESSONS:

Video 2: Gibb’s Free Energy Example with Example Problems

  1. Write the equation presented on the board. Record each heat of formation of the reactants and products. Show how the instructor found the Enthalpy of the reaction. (products – reactants).
  1. We need to figure out the Delta S for each, as well. Record all information that the instructor gives us. Calculate the Entropy of the reaction with the instructor.
  1. Calculate the Gibbs free energy for this reaction, and state whether the reaction is spontaneous. Record all work as the instructor present the example.

Video: Gibb’s Free Energy and the Equilibrium Problem

Record the problem from the board presented: Calculate the Free Energy of the following reaction:

Solve this problem and record the notes as the presenter solves the problems.
