Hi,

As a Computer Support Specialist and more specifically Training Officer I am responsible for manning the help desk from time to time and also providing training for the library staff on issues relating to the use of technology.

Hi,

The libraries are evolving and adapting to the fact that technology is in every facet of our lives. More and more people are using “E-library” and online resources. The information is not only static (books) but very fluid (internet) and evolving at an exponential rate. In the midst of all these technological changes, the Libraries staff is playing catch-up.

My mandate as a training office is to help the Libraries staff with the catch-up process. By providing training sessions for the staff, one can ensure that students and other patron whom the staff serves get the best service. This is exciting for me as I can be a part of this change the libraries is going though.

There are many challenges that I see now and foresee in the future:

1.  First and foremost is the speed at which the technology is changing at. This will always be an issue. How do we accomplish that the students and our patrons get the newest and latest technology and also make sure that out staff are well trained in answering questions based on that new technology? This requires considerable time, effort and money.

2.  Another issue is the resistance we face when it comes to changing to a new technology. Change is very stressful for some and yet inevitable. The patrons are getting exposed to the up and coming and yet some are opposed to it. How do we help with this transition and still maintain the historical aspects?

3.  Last but not the least, communication between the Libraries staff and the Tec-Net staff is a crucial issue. Despite our best efforts communication can be delayed and or worse, misinterpreted. How do we continue to make sure that staff gets the necessary help at the fastest possible time?
