This is my collection to date I would be grateful for any additions, corrections and updates, especially for the blanks.

  1. Anglican Colleges and Courses

COLLEGES (still open at October 1999)

King’s College, London, AKC (1846): from 1862-1882: black, lined and bound ¼” mauve [s1]. From 1882: black, bound on all edges 1” mauve. [f1] . There is a gown, of [m10] pattern, in black stuff, and with inverted-T armholes; these may be bound ¼” black velvet.

Queen’s College, Birmingham (1828): black, lined and bound ½” violet. [f1]

St Michael’s College, Llandaff (1892): black, bound on all edges ½” gold, and the cowl faced 1” scarlet. [s1]

Ripon College, Cuddesdon: black, lined and bound ½” dark blue. [s2]

- a union of Cuddesdon College and Ripon Hall. No hood for either college.

St Stephen’s House, Oxford (1876): black, bound on all edges 1” red. [s2]

Wycliffe Hall, Oxford (1877): dark blue, the cowl bound 2” white. [s1]

Westcott House, Cambridge: black, the cowl faced 1” red and 1” silver. [f1]

Ridley Hall, Cambridge (1879): black the cowl faced 1” red and 1” green set 1” away. [f1]

College of the Ressurexion, Mirfield (1902): black, the cowl faced 3” mid-green. [s1]

Trinity College, Bristol (1971): scarlet, lined black, the cowl faced 3” grey. [f3]

- a union of Clifton College, Tyndale Hall and … Hoods listed below.

St John’s College, Nottingham: black, the cowl faced 2” and bound ½” red. [s1]

Oak Hill College, London (1932): dark blue, the cowl face 6” pale blue.

COURSES (these tend to merge; they may be many others out there. These are the ones listed in Crockford 1996)

East Anglian Ministerial Training Course: black lined black, with 3 purple chevrons 1” wide set 1” apart. [f1] (formed from the Norwich Ordination Course (no hood), the Ely Course (hood?) and one for St Eds & Ips).

Northern Ordination Course: black, lined grey, the cowl faced 3” and bound ¼” flame-red. [s1] (was originally the North-western OC)

Carlisle Diocesan Training Institute: black, the cowl faced 3” violet, and bound 1” grey. [s2]

Oak Hill College Ministerial Training Scheme: dark blue, the cowl bound pale blue cord. [s1]

Canterbury School of Ministry: black, lined pale blue watered, the cowl bordered 2” white. This is a special full shape, with pointed cape.

East Midlands Ministerial Training Course:

North-eastern Ordination Course: black, the cowl faced 3” red, and 1” blue [f1]

Manchester Diocesan LNSM Scheme: black, lined red, the cowl faced 2” gold. [s2]

Oxford Ministerial Course:

Southwark Ordination Course: according to Haycraft 1972, dark red brocade lined grey [s1]. Those I have seen are grey lined scarlet, [f1].

COLLEGES NOW CLOSED (October 1999)

Edinburgh, Coates Hall (1810-199?): black, lined thistle green. [f1]

Chichester Theological College (1839-1994): until 1948: black, bound on all edges with red cord [f1]; after 1948: black, lined grey, the cowl faced 3” and the cape bound 1” rose. [f3]. The gown for this latter hood was London BA pattern [b4], with rose cords and buttons.

Lincoln, Scholæ Cancellarii (1874-1995): black the cowl faced 4” peacock blue. [f1]

Lichfield, College of Sts Mary & John (1857-1972): black, bound on all edges 1” yellow-gold [f1]

Rochester (1959-70): black, the cowl faced 4” gold and bound 1” red. [s2]

Salisbury (1860-1971): black, the cowl faced with 2 x ½” bands of white set ½ ” apart. [f1] (Usually made with a facing of white 1½ ” wide with ½” black laid on).

Wells (1845-1971): black, lined gold and bound on all edges 12 blue [s2]

these combined in 1971 to form

Sarum/Salisbury-Wells (1971-1993): grey, lined sarum red, the cowl faced 3” gold and the cape and cowl faced on the outside ½ ” blue. [f1] (Originally made without the gold facing, and the cowl only bound ½” blue).

London College of Divinity (ALCD): black, bound on all edges 1” red [f3] (became St John’s, Nottingham)

Hawarden, St Deiniol’s Library : black the cowl faced 1” gold and 1” blue set 1” apart [s1]

Kelham, Society of the Sacred Mission (1894-??): black, the cowl faced 3” and bound 1” sarum red. [s1]

Islington, Church Missionary Society College (1825-1915): black, bound on all edges 1” steel grey [s1]

Warminster, St Boniface’ College (1860-1979): black, bound on all edges 1” sarum, red; the cowl edging being set ¾ ” in from the edge [f1]

Cumbrae (1850-1888): black the cowl faced 1” red set ½” in. [f1]

Ely Theological College (1876-1964): black, bound on all edges ½” gold and the cowl faced 1” scarlet.[f1]

Manchester, Scholæ Episcopi (1890-1914): black the cowl faced 1” red and bound ½”gold. [f1]

Manchester, Egerton Hall (1908-44): black, the cowl faced 1” cherry and bound on all edges 1” purple. [f1]

Cheshunt, Bishop’s College (1909-69): black, bound on all edges 1” purple [f3]

Worcester Ordination College(1952-69): black, the cowl faced 1” red and 1” white. [s1]

Birkenhead, St Aidan’s College (1849-1969): black, the cowl faced 4” and the cape bound ½” grey [f1, but with the liripipe cut very short).

Canterbury, St Augustine’s College (1848-1976): black, the cowl faced 4” and bound ½” red [s1]

Gloucester (1868-97): black, the cowl faced 2” and bound ½”puce [s1, but originally f1]

Barton, St Paul’s College (??-??): black, bound on all edges 1” purple [f1]

Burgh. St Paul’s College (1878-1936): black, bound on all edges 1” white [f1]

Dunoon (??-??): black, bound on all edges 1” dark blue [f1]

Isle of Man, Bishop Wilson College (1889-1943): black, the cowl faced 2” lavender [f1]

Bristol, Clifton College (1932-71): black, the cowl faced 4” blue [f3]

Bristol, Tyndale Hall (1925-71): black, bound on all edges 1” green [f1] (originally the Bible Churchman’s College)

these two combined in 1971 with another college to form Trinity Bristol, q.v. supra

Dorchester (1878-1942): black, bound on all edges 1” blue [s1]

Truro (1877-1900): black, bound on all edges grey fur [f1]: this was revived for the NSM course.

Launde Abbey, Leicester (??-??): black, the cowl faced 1” cherry and 1” green set 1” away [f1]

Pampisford, St Andrew’s College (1933-48): black, the cowl faced 2” blue and bound on all edges 1” white [f3] – reputedly the hood.

St Bee’s College (1816-96): 1816-66: black, lined on the left side with white, and on the right side with red [s1]. 1866-96: black lined mauve [s1]. The gown was a black MA gown with the sleeve ends cut straight [m10].

Farnham (1899-1919): ??

Hooton Pagnell, St Chad’s College (1902-16): ??

Leeds Clergy School (1876-1925): probably no hood, as it was for graduates only.

Newcastle-on-Tyne (1901-??): probably no hood, as it was for graduates only.

Salford, Ordsall Hall (1989-1907): probably no hood, as it was for graduates only.

Lambeth, STh: black, the lining divided per chevron, white above light blue. [f1]

Durham, St Chad’s College: black the cowl faced 2” green. [f7]

Durham, St John’s College: black the cowl faced 2” blue. [f7]

Durham, LTh (??-1948?): black, the cape bound 12 and the cowl faced 2” black velvet, the cowl also bound ½” palatinate purple. [f6, but without any liripipe]

Lampeter, LD (1884-1940); DipTh (1969-197.): black, bound on all edges 1” white. [f1]

Lampeter, LTh: black, lined violet [f1] (also for LRS)

London Bible College, ALBC: maroon, part-lined silver-grey, the cowl bound 1” green [f1]

Evangelical Preachers’ Association, FEPA: black the cowl faced 21 red. [f1]

Evangelical Institute of Theology, Diploma: dark blue lined light blue [s1]

Faculty of Theology of the Presbyterian Church of Ireland:

BD: black lined purple bound fur [s3] or [f2]

DD: black lined and bound purple [f2] - but both were originally [s4]

Protestant Evangelical Church of England (Protestant Episcopal Reformed Church):

ATh: black lined grey, the cowl faced 1” purple. [f3]

LTh: black lined grey, the cowl faced 2” purple [f3] –at one time all were [s2]

FTh: black lined grey, the cowl faced 3” purple [f3]

Free Church of England:

Presbyters: black lined shot pink, bound on all edges 1” blue. [f1]

Bishops: scarlet lined shot pink. [f1]

Wessex Theological College: black lined silver grey, tipped maroon, and the cowl faced 1” gold [a1]

National College of Divinity:

BTh: black, the cowl bound 1½” red. [s1]

MTh: black lined red [s1]

St Columba’s Theological Hostel: black, the cowl faced 3” moss-green.

London College of Theology: black lined grass green. [s1]
