Theme “Let’s Make Friends” (8 form)

Objectives:

-to develop the skills of monological and dialogical speaking;

-to improve listening skills;

-to involve the pupils into communication according to the given situation;

-to develop cognitive and creative skills;

-to foster positive emotions;

-to develop free speaking using personal experience and knowledge, exchanging opinions on the subject.

Materials: a tape-recorder, cards, a map of Great Britain.

Procedure of the lesson:

I The beginning of the lesson.

T: Good afternoon, children! Glad to see you. How are you today?

P1: I’m OK, thank you.

P2: Thank you, I’m fine.

P3: I’m all right, thanks.

T: The theme of our lesson today is “Let’s make friends”. We’ll speak about the ways to make friends and to be friendly. You’ll make new friends today at our lesson and tell us about them.

But we’ll being our lesson with a phonetic drill.

IIPhonetic Drill

T: Listen to the rhyme written on the blackboard and be ready to read it

Jack’s English is wonderful

He speaks very well

His accent is perfect

You can’t really tell

That he isn’t a native

Of the USA

There’s only one problem:

He has nothing to say.

(Pupils read the rhyme after the teacher in chorus then individually)

IIIWarming Up

T: Now we’ll have a short talk about your English and the ways to master the language. (Pupils speak about their English)

T: Your English is different. But what are the ways to master it. Think and say what these ways are.

P1: To learn new words;

P2: To learn grammar;

P3: To learn pronunciation;

P4: To read English books and translate what you read;

P5: To learn things by heart;

P6: To speak as much as possible;

P7: To write tests, dictations, etc.

P8: To make up and act out dialogues;

P9: To listen to the bearers of English;

P10: To watch English films and educational programmes;

P11: To sing English songs and play language games;

T: Thank you. You know perfectly well how to master English and I’m sure you’ll have good progress in your English if you follow all these instructions.

But why is it necessary to know English well?

P1: To be able to communicate with people from other countries because everybody knows that English is a language of international communication.

P2: If you know English you have no problems when you visit other countries.

T: Exactly so. And today you’ll have a wonderful chance to show your English.

Imagine that you are at the International English Language Camp. You’ve come here to spend your holidays and of course, to make new friends. But I’m sure, you want to know where this camp is situated, don’t you? Then listen to my story and then you’ll guess the place where this camp is situated.

Oxford:

T: Have you guessed the place?

P1: I think it’s Oxford.

T: You are right. It’s Oxford, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities of England. It is often called “international”. Why?

P1: Because people from many parts of the world come here to study at its university.

T: It’s true. And now when you are at the camp you would like to get acquainted with other people. As you know acquaintance begins with introducing. So, now you are to introduce yourselves.

1) Introducing

P1: Hi, I’m Van Lee. I’m from Hanoi, Vietnam. I’m 14. I’m in the 8th form. My hobby is wrestling.

P2: Hello, I’m John Brown. I’m from Manchester, Britain. I’m 15. I’m in the 9th form. I’m fond of sports.

P3: Hi, I’m Alina Vasilyeva. I’m from Kirovograd, Ukraine. I’m 15. My hobbies are gymnastics, dancing.

P4: Hello, I’m Mishele Legran. I’m from Paris, France. I’m 16. I’m fond of sports, computer games.

T: Thank you for introducing yourselves. It was interesting to get acquainted with you and to learn about your hobbies.

And now I think you would like to make new friends. You are to do it according to your interests.

(Pupils make friends according to their interests written on the cards)

Cards:

T: Now when you’ve made new friends you would like to know as much as possible about them. For this you are to ask each other questions.

T: Thank you. I suppose, you’ve learned many things about your new friends and now it would be interesting for us to hear about them.

P1: My friend’s name is Van Lee. As you know he is from Vietnam. He lives in a big family. There are 7 of them: mother, father, two sisters and three brothers. He is youngest in the family. His family is very friendly. They all like to travel. He has already been to France, Italy, China. He’s fond of wrestling. His favourite subject is English. He has been studying it for 6 years. Besides English he studies Chinese. After leaving school he wants to become a doctor as his parents are doctors. At his free time he likes to watch TV, to work on a computer. He doesn’t like to get up early in the morning.

T: Thank you. It was really interesting to hear about your new friends and now I’d like you to listen to the story about my friend. Some days ago I got a postcard from her and now I’d like to read it to you. So, listen and be ready to say:
