Follows is a brief background and local history of Scarborough and its surrounding areas:-
The historic town of Scarboroughhas many things of interest. Opposite the town centre’s main railway station, lies Alan Ayckbourn’s - the world famous playwright - Stephen Joesph Theatre in the Round. On the South Bay sea front we have the beautiful Victorian Spa Theatre Complex. Near there, under the shadow of the magnificent Victorian 365 bedroom Grand Hotel (when built over 150 yearsago, it was Europe’s largest hotel), is theRotunda Museum exhibiting an abundance of Scarborough’s geological artefacts.
Just to the north of here is a12th century castle situated on top of a natural headland which looms over its naturally created sheltered harbour. This iconic headland splits Scarborough’s shoreline into two magnificent bays, the North and South Bays. Travelling around the base of the headland’s promenade, the Marine Drive, from the south side’s central part of the town, reveals the North Bay with its beautiful unspoilt sweeping beach. Unlike the commercial South Bay with its vibrant amusement arcades etc, the North Bay is comparatively serene and at its northern end you’ll find the pyramidal roofed Sea Life Centre. Behind the multi-coloured beach huts, that flank the central area of the beach, is the recently refurbished Open Air Theatre, re-opened officially by the Queen in June 2011. A miniature railway runs from this area to the Sea Life Centre at Scalby Mills. Nearby is the Japanese oriental themed gardens and boating lake in Peasholm Park.
Just below the castle on the headland’s southern escarpment is the 12th century church, St Marys. In its graveyard you can find the grave of the famous author, Anne Bronte. Panoramic views of the South Bay can be savoured here, and by walking across the road, the North Bay can be viewed almost ‘aerially’ too.
Scarborough is served by a good network of roads that can take you within a 60km radius to other historic towns and breathtaking countryside. Going north out of Scarborough, you can visit the beautiful old smuggling fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay, and further north, 48km from Scarborough, Captain Cook’s home town, Whitby.
Heading directly west from Scarborough you can travel along the northern flank of the last ice age’s glacial lake bed, the Vale of Pickering. The National Park, The North Yorkshire Moors, is immediately above to the north, with the beautiful market towns of Pickering and Helmsley along the way. Travelling in a south westerly direction, you can get to the famous stately home of Castle Howard and beyond there, about 40 miles away from Scarborough, the jewel of the north of England in city terms, York, which is built around Europe’s 2nd largest gothic cathedral. .
Yours faithfully,
Chris Mountford (co-ordinator, English Venture Work Experience scheme)
