Theater Arts I

Technical Theater Projects

Theater Arts I Students will need to select ONEof the following projects to complete a project that will represent two assessment grades for the quarter. Our 4th quarter is focused on technical theater and students will have class time where we discuss information that can be applied to the projects. Students should wait until the topic has been discussed to start the project, so that they include the topics/vocabulary discussed in class. Technical projects needs to be based on the plays and musicals watched and discussed in class: Phantom of the Opera, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Annie Get Your Gun, and Wizard of Oz. Target Due Date will be the First Week in May. We will firm up dates as week get closer. Testing will be in full swing and I need to see that schedule before I can establish strong due dates.

Makeup Design Projects:

1. Video of Application:Students design a makeup application based on one of the character from the shows listed above. They complete a rendering that should represent the completed makeup application. The rendering should be turned into Ms. Richards when the video is watched in class. Students will film and edit the application into a video lasting 3 to 5 minutes. Time lapse may be used as various points. The student needs to explain the products and application. Completed video and rendering both part of the grade. Consider how you will edit and get the final video to Ms. Richards for viewing, sharing and grading. Video will be shared with the class for all students to learn more about make up application. Application can be done on a model or on you. (1 person project)

2. Set of Makeup Renderings: Student will select two charactersfrom the list of shows above and complete and detailed renderings with directions for a makeup crew on how to apply the design. The directions and renderings need to be mounted to design boards as discussed by Ms. Richards in class. Pictures of products, and a detailed guide for application are key to doing a great job on this project. Hairstyles are considered a part of makeup design. I have examples in my room of great boards completed by students. (1 person project)

3. Product Board: Theater student will complete a product board with at least 12 products on the board. Each of the products will be labeled and will have a diagram of a face showing us where it would be applied. The student should also include a brief description of the product and how it used in stage make up. The sample products should be sealed so they will not make a mess. PRODUCT BOARDS ARE NOT RETURNED AND MAKEUP SAMPLES ARE NOT RETURNED. PLEASE DO NO BUY PRODUCTS, USE DISCARDS!!!!! ASK YOUR MOTHER OR SISTER BEFORE YOU TAKE ITEMS! (1 person project)

Costume Projects:

1. Set of Rendering: Using costume templates as a guide (we practiced this in class), student will complete two costume rendering boards. The boards will contain the completed, detailed, neat rendering and fabric samples (swatches) for the costume. Ms. Richards has example boards in class that are a good representation of how boards need to be completed. The costume boards need to be based on characters from the shows above. A rendering board can also have buttons, trims and other items that would help a design shop to create that costume. (1 person project)

2. Junk Costume Design: Student will complete a costume for one of the characters from the listed above. The costume needs to be comprised of discards: cardboard, tarps, newspaper, and other free and inexpensive materials. Student can video the process to show us the costume and the steps and junk used to complete it. The creation process needs to be explained in some way (dub over, during recording or live with us showing the video). You could also model the costume in class and explain to us using the completed costume how it was constructed (step by step). Consider how you will edit and get the final video to Ms. Richards for viewing and grading. Of course if this project is turned in as a video it will be shared with the class. (1 person project)

Lighting Project:

1. Lighting Equipment Board: Student will complete a board with at least 8 pictures of lighting and special effects equipment items. Each picture will need to be labeled and a description of how the equipment could be used in the shows above. A small thumbnail or picture should also be placed on the board showing the final visual result for the audience when the equipment is being used. (1 person project)

Sound Project:

1. Foley Sound Project: Students will take at least two minutes of captured footage or create two minutes of their own created video footage (mini movie). Then using an editing program such as iMovie the sound will be removed, and the student will create all new vocals and sound effects to go with the video footage. The new sound track should contain at least 15 different sounds created by the student. Student may also use two cuttings of the music in the sound design of this project. Consider how you will edit and get the final video to Ms. Richards for viewing and grading. Video will be shared with the class for all students to learn more about the art of Foley. Students can use footage from one of the shows listed above if they would choose. Footage and content need to be school appropriate. (1 person project)

Publicity Design Project:

1. Publicity Design Board: Student will use one of the productions listed above to develop a publicity campaign for the show as if the show was produced on our campus here at Landrum. The production date will be May the 6th. Items that need to be included for the production board would include a program for the show, example tickets for the show, flyers and one announcement that could be made at school. Ms. Richards has an example board and more information can be found in our theater books.

Scenic/Set Design:

1. Design and Paint a Fabric Drop: Using muslin, canvas or cutting from a painter’s drop cut out a square that will be your drop. If you have sewing skills you can hem it on the edges or use fabric glue to make the edges look finished. I would do the 8 1/2” by 11” (size of paper). Design a drop using the shows listed at the start of this project list and paint the miniature drop. A sharpie really helpful to finish out the lines for a more complete and detailed look. Texture and other items can be added to the drop. Examples are hanging in my room. Keep scale and perspective in mind as well as the period of the play. (1 person project)

2. Display of Set Pieces: Make a display board with a miniature flat, stairs, platform, ramp, truck and drop. Each of the pieces should look like they are part of a set from one show from the list. They can fit together and work together to create larger combined set pieces. Balsa wood, poster board, cardboard and other materials should be used to complete this project. Paint or color to develop the look for the show. If the truck opens to a set you will get 10 bonus points added to your project. There is an example hanging in my room. (I person project)

3. Scale Set Design: Students will use one of my scale stages to create a scaled set design. The stage is based on 0’-1’’=1’-0” scale. Drops, stairs, ramps, platforms, flats and trucks can be used as well as other items we will discuss in class. The final pieces must look like smaller versions of what you would want large scale on stage. So example sets would be….inside the cabin (Seven Brides), Shooting contest (Annie), Cornfield with Scarecrow (OZ), Creepy Phantom Hideout (Phantom). Items should be painted, textured and so on to give effect of final finishes. At least six set pieces need to be completed for this design project. Student (s) will give a presentation to the class about choices and how they would construct items. (two students= 6 pcs., 1 student=3 pcs.)
