The William Randolph Hearst Fellowship

The School of Public Health offers Graduate Awards to students who are in good academic standing and demonstrate merit. Students should submit a separate application for each award they wish to be considered for.

The William Randolph Hearst Fellowship – Awarded to MS or MPH students only

The Hearst Fellowship of the School of Public Health promotes academic and creative excellence in public health among students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The fellowship is available to support incoming minority students.

Stipend: The Fellowship provides a stipend for one academic year and partial tuition.The value of the fellowship rangesbetween $5,000-$10,000.

Eligibility: Applicants must be:

  • An entering student and must have completed an application for graduate study
  • Pursuing an MS or MPH degree
  • Members of one of the following under-represented groups:
  • African-American (a person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa)
  • Latino (a person having origins in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Caribbean, Central America and South America)
  • Native American (a person descended from any of the original peoples of North America and who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition, which includes American Indians and Alaskan Natives)
  • Native Hawaiian orPacific Islander
  • US citizens or permanent residents

Fields: Students enrolling in any of the Mastersdegree programs at the School of Public Health are eligible. These include Epidemiology, Biometry and Statistics, Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Health Sciences, and the interdepartmental Masters of Public Health.

Applications: Applicants should submit a resume and brief essay describing their interest in the fellowship and outlining their goals related to public health and public service. These materials will be forwarded to the Hearst Committee along with the applicant’s admissions packet.

All materials will be reviewed by the Diversity and Recruitment Committee. The committee meets in March to choose the fellow for the following year. Only students admitted to the School by then will be considered.
