January 25 ~ Third Sunday of Ordinary Time

Again this week Jesus invites us to “Come…” Peter, Andrew, James and John left their nets, left their father, and followed Jesus. Jesus does not ask most of us to leave home and hearth but he does ask us, right here, right now, to move out of our comfort zone and follow Him. Be prepared to speak about your relationship with Jesus. Pray about what to say when you are asked why you go to church. Be willing to be fishers of men and women! Pray for those who are being called to leave home and hearth and follow God’s call to the priesthood, permanent diaconate, or consecrated life.

February, 2015

February 1 ~ Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In his letter to the Corinthians Paul writes, “Brothers and Sisters, I should like you to be free of anxieties.” What a wonderful message! Parishes in Phase III collaboratives are preparing for a new way of leadership and ministry that will begin in June. Along with excitement and hope, surely there is some anxiety. We pray for the parishioners, clergy, and staff of these parishes, that they will move forward in prayer and with courage.

February 8 ~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.” Jesus knew that he needed time alone in prayer. We do too but sometimes the pace of everyday life seems to crowd out any “alone” time. Caring for children, parents, and work responsibilities, leaves little time to go off to a quiet place. With some effort, however, it is possible to find opportunities for prayer during the day: in the car, with the radio off, or a prayer CD on; on the T, praying rather than reading the paper; folding laundry, in line at the coffee shop; or stirring pasta sauce for dinner. These may not be deserted places but they can be occasions for prayer that will bear good fruit.

February 15 ~ Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint Paul can be so down to earth! He couldn’t be any more directive with his simple advice: “…do everything for the glory of God”. Ash Wednesday and Lent are near. Make Paul’s words a mantra: everything for the glory of God. It will make a difference in your life.

February 22 ~ First Sunday of Lent

Lent. Ashes. Repentance. If it sounds gloomy, listen to the first reading. Covenant. This is the message. This is God’s promise to Noah, and all his descendants, and every living creature. God is with us. Pray in a special way today for those who are preparing for baptism, or to be received into the Catholic Church, or to complete their initiation in the faith that was begun at their baptism.
