Thirty Two Years!!!
Kenneth D. Sils
“You have ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; you have ravished my heart with one look of your eyes, with one link of your necklace. How fair is your love, my sister, my spouse!” Song Of Solomon 4:9-10
Speaking to those of you who are married, can you remember? Can you remember how you felt about the beautiful young lady or that handsome young man? Oh yes, I remember – memories are good! I remember October 5, 1985 – 32 brief years ago last Thursday, my sister in Christ, Sandra Isenberg, became: my sister, my spouse! And, so much of that time and day feels like yesterday and yet, it was over 32 years ago!
For most of America today, marriage appears to be recorded in “dog years” (like multiply it by seven), so my marriage feels like 224 years old. Sad, isn’t it! I’ve been told that the average American marriage that begins today lasts a little bit over three years and has been broken down as: the first year: the honeymoon, the second year: the fighting and the 3rd year: the divorce. So many in our generation have given up on marriage for a host of reasons, but the main appears that they just don’t believe it will last. They’ve bought into the mantra of: vow to each other… as long as you both shall love!
Jesus, our great lawgiver insists that, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate, Matthew 19:6.” So, how do you keep it together for so long? Determination! Resolve! Forgiveness! Love! Paul, speaking by divine inspiration said, “Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband, 1 Corinthians 7:3.” Some people treat their dogs and cats better than they do their spouse and then they wonder, “why doesn’t he/she love me anymore?” The devil simply could not have found a more destructive tool to cut the heart out of a nation – divorce!
It doesn’t have to be this way! Think back… back to the day when love flourished, when he/she ravished your heart! You can find a way back to that place! The Proverb writer encouraged the young man to, “… always be enraptured with her love, Proverbs 5:19.” Woo her again! Romance him again! Talk about it to each other and try again! God is for you and He wants your marriage to flourish. Thirty Two Years! Thank you Sandra, I love you!
