1About The Urology Foundation Clinical/Research Visits

We believe that urology patients in the UK and Ireland deserve access to the most advanceddiagnostic tools and treatment options available. Observing colleagues in international centres of excellence helps to bring pioneeringtechniques and technology to the UK, and enable motivated and like-minded clinicians to discuss their clinical findingsin person and see new approaches first-hand.

Meeting the training needs of the profession is one of the objectives of The Urology Foundation. We pay close attention to the BAUS workforce survey and identified skills gaps.

Thus we are particularly keen to encourage and invite applications for clinical visits from the following sub-specialties:

  • Andrology.
  • General Paediatric urology.
  • Female and Reconstructive urology.

Applications for research visits may include, but are not limited to:

  • Learning a new clinical research technique which is not available where the researcher is currently working but would enhance the programme of work.
  • Learning a new laboratory technique to assist with specific projects, such as stem cell technology to support reconstructive and cancer research.
  • Acquiring expertise in new imaging techniques to facilitate research egmultiparametric MRI or PET imaging platforms.

We invite you to apply for a grant of up to £1,750to visit a unit of your choice, which would help your clinical practice or research. If you would like to visit a particular department but are not acquainted with the head, then we would be happy to contact him or her on your behalf. (NB: clinical visit funding is not available to visit places that already have a TUF Preceptorship scheme running.)

On completion of your visit you are required to provide a report of not more than two pages of A4 on your visit. NB: Payment is dependent upon receipt of this report. The report should focus on how the visit will impact on your clinical or research practiceand, if possible, demonstrate how it will improve patient careor enhance your research programme.

Selection Procedure

Applications are reviewed by TUF’s Scientific & Education Committee (SEC) and applicants should be notified of the outcome within one month. Criteria for review include:

  • An assessment of the centre for the proposed visit purpose.
  • The suitability of the candidate will be taken into account i.e. stage of training, career objectives, etc.
  • Whether there already exist good opportunities within the UK to observe or practise the technique(s) proposed.
  • Whether the proposed visit meets the objectives of The Urology Foundation and workforce gaps.
