Program

On Friday evening, Lance Metz will present the Richardson Glass plate slides including views of some of the highest lift locks ever built on a towpath canal. These glass plate slides were produced in the 20’s and 30’s by one of our early society pioneers, George Atwell Richardson. This is a rare presentation of an obsolete medium valued for its high clarity. Following Lance's presentation, Gordon Perry will present historical views of lock ruins and canal features as they appear today, and there will be an overview of some of the sites we will be visiting on Saturday’s excursion.

On Saturday we will board rented 15 passenger vans for a trip to visit lock sites, dam sites,

and manyadditional points of interest along the Upper Grand section of the Lehigh Navigation, a slack water navigation system primarily designed to bring coal to Philadelphia. At White Haven, we will view the remains of the uppermost lock and dam in the system. We will then proceed southward and enter the Lehigh National Corridor trail where we will be escorted by Diane Madl, a member of the LehighGorgeState Park personnel.

Some of the sites we will be viewing include the following:

  • Lock 28- in excellent condition; with a lift of 22 feet; filling tunnel is visible that was

designed to reduce the time necessary to fill lock chambers with the

immense dimensions of the LehighCanal locks.

  • Lehigh Tannery- view the remains of Lock 27 which had the highest lift (30 feet!)

on the Lehigh Navigation system.

- view the remains of a tannery operated by the Thomas Small

Company, at one time the largest tannery in the country, processing

Over 50,000 hides per year!

- view the remains of another milling complex devoted to the

logging industry.

  • Locks 25, 24, 22-massive locks in excellent condition!
  • Mud Run- site of impressive stone archway for the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
  • Rockport- the terminus of the Buck Mountain Gravity Railroad; we will see the rock

cut tunnel, another feeder of coal to the Lehigh Navigation.

  • Penn Haven Junction & Planes- view the remains of the steam driven plains where

iron bands were used to lower coal cars to the Lehigh Navigation; also the site of the Beaver Meadow RR junction with the Lehigh Navigation and the site of the only railroad station accessible only by rail.

  • Ox Bow Bend- pipeline bridge.
  • Glen Onoko
  • Lock 2 and remains of railroad turntable.
  • Additional seldom seen canal artifacts will be shown throughout the trip.

Upon returning to the hotel, we will meet at Trainer’s Inn for the evening banquet and

program. John Drury and Michael Nunnamacher will present on the Switchback Railroad.

John Drury has been promoting Jim Thorpe’s architectural and historical legacy thru his

MauchChunkMuseum, and is currently spearheading a movement to bring a working

plane back to Jim Thorpe. John Nunnamacher is curator at the MauchChunkMuseum.
