Background

  • These units were created following a visit undertaken by a teacher and the Headteacher of Ysgol Tregarth to the Denu area of Ghana in August 2007. Ysgol Tregarth and Ysgol Bodfeurig (a neighbouring school, both of whom are served by the same Headteacher) have established partnerships with two schools since 2006, namely the Great Royal School and the Adafienu Amalgamated School in Denu, which is situated in the Volta region of Ghana. Teachers from the school were invited to mark the tenth anniversary of the foundation of the Great Royal School in August 2007. During their visit, they were able to learn about and garner photographs and information about Ghana, the Volta region, Denu (that is the locality of both schools), the schools, homes, food and the culture of this part of Ghana. Since our visit, the pupils of Ysgol Tregarth have collaborated with pupils from two of the schools involved in the ‘My World - Your World’ project. The schools have exchanged information regarding life within the school, life within the home and life in their various localities. The information and experiences gained throughout our visit coupled with the work exchanged between pupils of all the schools are contained within these units of work. Ysgol Tregarth would like to thank the staff and pupils of both the schools in Ghana for all their assistance in preparing these units.

The Units of Work

  • The following units are aimed at Years 5 and 6. You may modify thecontentfor usewith Years 3 and 4 by omitting units, or selecting various units of work or activities within those units.
  • The attatchments to the relevant websites that are found in the Notebook files are a resource that is directly relevant to the task, as well as being a resource that allows the learners the opportunity to research further or gives the teacher a readily available extra resource.
  • These units are progressive, but they may also be used separately. In addition to using these units while studying contrasting areas/countries, you may use some units to embellish other curricular themes and fields of activity. Many of these units are relevant to themes such as Travel, Water (rivers, flooding, wet seasons, sources of water), Food, Lifestyle, Justice, Children's Rights/Human Rights, Slavery - Past and Present, Links, Hopes etc.
  • In Years 3 and 4, you may use the PowerPoint Presentations as a means of conveying texts which contain more basic information, enabling the task to be excercised without hindrance from the text.
  • The reaction files from the children of Ghana chroniclethe answers received by pupils from the Great Royal School andthe Adafienu Amalgamated School in Ghana. The questions were posed by the pupils of Ysgol Tregarth. The answers were then sent back to the pupils at Ysgol Tregarth. This gives your children the opportunity to garner information and also read the views of their peers in various countries.
  • You may use some of the photographs in the Foundation Phase. These photographs may be used as stimuli for the younger pupils during role play, or within areas where the pupils may view and compare the photographs. There is scope for the use of these photographs in oral studies lead by an adult. The photographs could be used as a stimulus for children as they begin to write and construct sentences.
