UKBTR Transport Guidelines

The privacy of the surrender (and foster) family should be respected at all times. Please don't discuss details of a transport or post on social media; their privacy is as important as yours. Please remember you’re representing UKBTR.

You should never transport any dogs with children, babies or other animals without consulting with UKBTR first. Unassessed / unknown dogs can be a risk that shouldn't be taken.

When transporting dogs they should be crated where possible or at the very least secured into the seat belt clip. They should not be unsecured, free roaming or sitting on a lap unsecured. As a transporter you are responsible for the safety of the animal in your care for your part of the journey.

If you are transporting more than 1 dog at the same time, they must be crated separately, even if they are a bonded pair. Dogs can and do experience stress and a car journey, particularly after a stressful or traumatic period, can be very difficult for some dogs and can result in them acting aggressively or out of their usual character. If you can only crate 1 dog, you may transport another single dog providing it is secured adequately and is not able to make contact with the crated dog.

If you experience any issues whilst transporting, please contact the UKBTR representative you have been dealing with.

Please ensure if you have any paperwork traveling with the dog, do not forget to hand this on to the further transporters or the end foster family.

It is recommended to carry the following items on any run:

  • Spare harness or collar and a lead, a dog may not always come with them.
  • Fresh water and a bowl - essential on longer journeys and during the summer months.
  • Poo Bags. Wipes / Kitchen towel.
  • Antiseptic wipes or cleaner (in case of accidents).
  • Treats (Chicken or sausage seems to work best).

Finally please always clean areas that have been used by a dog in transit to eliminate the spread of potential germs, illnesses and to reduce stress to your own animals of unknown animals being in your car.
