The Time Travellers Series - Week 1

Time Travellers and the Revelation of God

I remember recommending a movie for a movie night at igniteYOUTH some years back – a remake of the older movie - and it freaked everyone out really badly! But it highlighted the idea of travelling back in time to change your present and future. Many movies like Back to the Future, Stargate and Timeline have had the same idea.

When you make a booking to fly with an airline to a destination you have to select WHERE you want to travel to!

Imagine if you went online and you got to choose WHEN you wanted to travel to – not just WHERE???

Share: If you could travel to one time in history…when would it be and why?

There is a BBC television series called Doctor Who that deals with travelling back in time.

The main characters use what is knows as a TARDIS to travel through time. From the outside it looks just like a phone box but inside it is spacious and filled with all osrts of gadgets! By the way, “TARDIS” stands for “Time and Relative Dimensions in Space”.

Once you are settled in the Tardis you can fasten your seat belt and head for any place in time

And of course using a worm hole can shorten the length of your journey!

Well if you are wanting to travel through time what are you going to do?

Well, the good news is that you don’t need to find a crazy scientist

Nor save up to buy a machine that can travel through time!

Not get tossed around while travelling through time!

Just join us on The Time Travellers Series at igniteYOUTH on Sunday mornings during this term!

And as time travellers today you are going to travel through time to experience a fresh revelation of GOD.

So fasten your seatbelt, our destination is Eternity Past!

So jump on the time machine with me as we make our way back through time to the beginning! We make our way back in time – leaving the world behind us as we go further and further back in time.

We watch in awe as spectacular scenery in space passes before our eyes.

Suddenly a city comes into view – shining with dazzling light and gold walls and roads.

And then we find ourselves in a throne room – not a physical place – but a spirit world.

There on the throne is God – supreme ruler of the universe!

As we observe the awe-inspiring scene before our eyes we realise that from our vantage point within the time machine we are starting to learn some incredible mysteries! Mysteries about God!

Mysteries about God! Firstly, God is great! For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise. (Psalm 96:4)

1. Our Great God is Eternal!

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Psalm 90:2)

2. Our Great God is Trinity! People have been trying to depict the mystery of the triune nature of God for centuries.

As we spend time in the presence of God we discover three persons in the Godhead: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Here is what we know: There is one God!

He exists in three personas! The Father is God! The Son is God! The Spirit is God!

But the Father is NOT the Spirit. The Son is NOT the Spirit. The Spirit is NOT the Father.

3. Our Great God is Mighty!

He is the supreme king over this heavenly city.

The LORD has established His throne in the heavens and His kingdom rules over all. (Psalm 103:19)

We have experienced some incredible revelation about God! Firstly we have seen that God is great! He is Eternal, Trinity and Mighty!

Secondly, God is Good! For the Lord is good and his love endures forever. (Psalm 100:5)

1. Our Good God is Holy!

Wherever we look there are angels surrounding God and they never stop singing this song: “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty!”

2. Our Good God is Love!

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. (Psalm 36:5)

The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in love. (Psalm 103:8)

3. Our Good God is Kind!

The LORD is righteous in all His ways, and kind in all His deeds. (Psalm 145:17)

In our revelation of God we discovered that God is Good: He is Holy, Love and Kind!

What a God!!! Great and Good!

So our God is an awesome God! We even sing about it! Ur God is an awesome God he reigns from heaven above with wisdom, power and love, our God is an awesome God. But so what?

It’s time to travel back to the future! I found a video, that although presented from an evolutionary perspective will get us back to the present in a minute:

What are the implications for our lives now that we have learned that God is Great and Good?

1. We can know God! "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 9:23,24) and "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth." (Psalms 145:18)

2. We can be great! God has designed us for greatness. We were born for greatness.

3. We can be good! The Bible says that God chose us before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him. (Ephesians 1:4)

So by now most of you have seen the Hobbit right? I finally got to watch it last night – and a scene with Gandalf reminded me of the importance of being good!

Video: A scene from The Hobbit around 1hour and 38 minutes where Gandalf speaks about what he has learnt about doing little acts of goodness can overcome evil.

Let’s pray!

Next week we will be travelling back in time to experience the creation of MAN.
