The Subject of the Lesson: Oh, No

Lesson 2:“Oh, no! It’s raining!”

The Objectives:

1)to learn new lexical material on topic “Weather”;

2)to revise the lexical material on topic “Seasons”;

3)to learn how to describe different types of weather;

4)to learn master the use of Present Continuous;

5)to speak about typical Ukrainian weather;

6)to master pupils’ listening comprehension, writing and reading skills;

Visual Aids:DVDplayer, DVDs,flash-cards, posters, articles, blackboard.

The Course of the Lesson:

1.PHONETIC WARM-UP:

The teacher greets the pupils and organizes the class for the work. He/she announces the topic of the lesson. For the phonetic warm-up the teacher presents the sound [w] on the blackboard and reminds its pronunciation. Then follows the poem “Weather” pinned up on the board with letter w underlined (choral and individual repetition):

Weather the weather is wet,

We must not fret.

But we’re thankful together,

Whatever the weather.

2. Lexical warm-up:

The teacher shows the pictures expressing seasons. Pupils fill in the missing words and translate them.

3. Presentation:

Using a DVD recorder the teacher presents some extracts from the films showing different types of weather. He/she asks the pupils to name the weather phenomena they see (in Ukrainian). Thenfollows the presentation of the new vocabulary. The teacher shows the flash cards and names them:

Pupils put them down into their vocabularies:

Sunny [s/\n]сонце

Rain [rein] дощ

Wind [wind] вітер

Blow [blәu] дути

Cloud [klaud] хмара

Wet [wet] мокро

Cold [cәuld] холодно

Hot [hot] спекотно

Cool [ku:l] прохолодно

Snow [snәu] сніг

What’s the weather like? [weðә]

The teacher explains how to describe weather using these words. For example:

Sunny → It is sunny!

Wind → The wind is blowing!

Hot → It is hot!

Pupils drill the new word and word combinations. The teacher shows the picture and asks them to put ticks or crosses in the appropriate boxes:

1) It's spring.
2) It's cold.
3) The sun is shining.
4) The wind isn't blowing.
5) It isn't snowing.
6) The children are skiing.
7) The children are not skating

4. LISTENINGREADING COMREHENSION:

a) pre-listening:

The teacher asks the pupils to describe the weather on the pictures using the question “What’s the weather like?” Pupils look at the pictures from the text, describe them and try to guess what time of the year and what weather is depicted.

b) while-listening:

The teacher asks the pupils to listen to the text and choose an appropriate picture.

1) — What is the weather like today?

—It's very cold.

—Is the sun shining?

— Yes, it is. And the sky is blue. But the wind is blowing.

2) — What is the weather like today?

—It's hot.

—Is the wind blowing?

—Yes, it is. And the sky is grey.

—Can we see the sun?

—No, the sun is not shining.
There are large grey clouds in the sky.

—Is it raining?

—No.

c) post-listening:

Pupils read, translate and act out the dialogues. They put a tick in the appropriate boxes under the pictures.

5. WRITING:

The teacher revises the use of Present Simple and Present Continuous Tenses. He/she asks the pupils to complete the following activities.

To master the use of new lexical material and revise the names of cloths the teacher gives the following activity:

Poster 1.Fill in. What things do you use on…

Using markers pupils complete the poster pinned up on the blackboard.

6. LET’S SING!

The teacher asks the pupils to have a look at the pictures and the text of the song“A time for everything!”. They are to complete it with the words below: the teacher runs the CD. Pupils fill in the missing words, translate and sing the song.

7. Speaking:

The teacher writes the sentence on the blackboard and ask the pupils to end it.Each pupil has to give to answers not repeating the previous ones:

8. Hometask setting:

- to learn the new word by heart;

- to learn the song “A time for everything!”

- to make a table “Weather” and during the week fill in the description of the current weather.

9. SUMMARY OF THE LESSON:
