xvi. Sample Exhibition (Stanford)

This example from Stanford describes the end-of-year Teacher Education Program Exhibition, designed as a capstone demonstration of teaching skills.

STEP Exhibition

2007-2008

Similar to senior exhibitions in high schools and dissertation hearings in doctoral programs, the end-of-the-year Exhibition provides you, the STEP teacher candidate, with an opportunity:

Ø  to share what you know and are able to do with people who are important to you and who supported you during the program,

Ø  to present, analyze, and reflect on your teaching,

Ø  to reflect, in the presence of colleagues, on your professional growth and development, your learning, and your accomplishments during this past year,

Ø  to create a sense of closure and accomplishments as you prepare to graduate from STEP and enter a new stage in your teaching career.

The Exhibition Committee

The Exhibition Committee consists of three members: your supervisor, a university-based faculty or staff, and a STEP colleague. The supervisor acts as the facilitator, time-keeper, and formal reviewer for the meeting. You may invite an additional member of your educational community (e.g., your cooperating teacher(s), a faculty member or administrator from your school, or another professional colleague) or other persons of your choice.

The Agenda

Ø  Presentation & Analysis of Teaching & Learning in Your Classroom ~35 minutes

After a brief introduction of the context of your classroom, your presentation will include a 5 minute clip of videotape selected from the video of your Teaching Event to illustrate a key point about your teaching and the students’ learning. (A transcription should be made available to the members of the committee if there are difficulties with the sound.) You may wish to focus on an aspect of the event that continues to provoke or to puzzle you. You should explain why you chose the particular clip, what you were trying to accomplish in this lesson, and what it represents about your practice and your students’ learning. Committee members and guests will respond by asking clarifying and probing questions.

Ø  Presentation of the Summary Reflection ~ 10 minutes

After reflecting on how your practice is developing in light of the California Standards for the Teaching Profession, you describe what you perceive as your strengths, areas of growth, and goals for future professional development. In the oral presentation, focus on selected standards that are particularly relevant and important to you at this time.

Ø  Questions & Comments from Members of the Committee ~10 minutes

Scaffolds and Supports

Your Teaching Event Advisor and your supervisor will continue to support you in preparing your Exhibition. The final version of your Teaching Event is due June 4th, 2008.

Time and Place

Exhibitions should be scheduled anytime between May 5th and May 23th, 2008. You need to secure the agreement of your supervisor prior to confirming a date. You will need to make available to members of the committee a working version of your Teaching Event and a draft of your Summary Reflection two days before the scheduled Exhibition.

The meetings may take place anywhere that makes sense for all members of the committee: at a school site, at someone’s home, or at Stanford.
