Program/Management/Supervisory Scope: The Worship Leader works closely with the Minister of Worship and/or the Associate Pastor of Administration, to plan and manage worship activities for the 9:55 A.M. Traditional Worship Service at South Euclid United Church of Christ (SEUCC).

Basic Function: The Worship Leader is responsible for creating an atmosphere for worship during the 9:55 A.M. Traditional Worship Service and is responsible for its efficient and effective presentation of music. In collaboration with the Minister of Worship and other members of the planning team, this basic function is achieved. Specific duties also include: leading choir rehearsals, including rehearsals with instrumentalists, researching and selecting music, maintaining the choral music library, auditioning, recruiting, and interviewing leading vocalists and instrumentalists, directly managing contracted musicians, and attending ministry meetings and mid-week staff meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities: / *Percent of Time / **E/N
  • Meets regularly with the Minister of Worship and/or the Associate Pastor of Administration to apprise on status of worship planning, practices, and implementation. Oversees and coordinates all musical aspects of the worship service.Leads the choir, instrumentalists, and congregation in worship and serves as the primary Organist (Pipe) and Pianist for the Traditional Worship Service. Ensures communication channels are open and effective amongst all people involved in the musical aspect of worship. Periodically reviews all instruments to ensure proper working order. Assists in the coordination of a blended worship service, i.e., Traditional & Contemporary, when called upon. Submits musical selections (on Tuesdays by 10:00 A.M.) for insertion into church bulletin. Assists in proof reading the bulletin. Responsible for funerals and/or other specific worship services, or assigning a designee per the approval of the Minister of Worship, as necessary.

  • Works with the Minister of Worship to arrange schedules for rehearsals and advises in song selections. Leads rehearsals with the choir and/or other instrumentalists. Provides music in advance (one month),so choir and instrumentalists are apprised of musical selections and dates/times of rehearsals. Oversees and coordinates music for the choir, ensures timely delivery of musical selections, and rehearsal dates/times. Maintains the choral music library. Purchases new music, i.e., sheet music, etc. Ensures communication channels are open and effective within the choir.

  • Auditions and/or recruits and interviews new vocalists and instrumentalists, as needed. Turns in necessary paper work to the Minister of Worship to process payments for instrumentalists, special guests, etc. Arranges for vocal substitutes and/or instrumentalists.

  • Assists in the planning and leading of two Worship Retreats per year. Assists with curriculum development agenda, execution, etc.

  • Serves as a liaison (in the absence of the Minister of Worship) for the Worship of the Arts Ministry Meetings (3rd Thursdays from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M.), and attends Mid-Week Staff Meetings (via conference call and/or in person).

**Essential (E) or Non-Essential (N) Duties/Responsibilities

Requirements, Skills & Abilities: A Bachelor’s Degree ispreferred or equivalent experience, plus five years’ experience leading a congregation in public worship, and the candidate must possess the desire to grow in this area through further training. The candidate must possess the ability to lead a dynamic and energy-filled worship service. The candidate must excel in playing the Pipe Organ. The candidate should possess the ability to play piano, Hammond Organ, and the electronic keyboard. The candidate must possess experience and expertise in leading and managing choirs, instrumentalists, and congregants in order to integrate these musical elements into the worship experience. The incumbent must have full knowledge of choral music, spirituals, anthems, hymns, traditional gospel and contemporary gospel music. Competency in teaching music is required. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to adhere to schedules, complete projects/assignments in a timely fashion when called upon, cooperate and work effectively with teams, and effectively work with all types of choir ministry partners. Additionally, the candidate must possess a dynamic personal and growing relationship with Christ and possess the ability to model a growing faith in others.

Working Conditions: This position works in a clean, well-lit area. This position is not susceptible to job hazards. Additionally, this position does not require any unusual or excessive physical exertion. Local, out-of-state, and/or international travel may be required, as directed by the Senior Pastor.

Work Schedule: The Worship Leader – 9:55 A.M. – Traditional Worship Services, generally works (15-20) hours each week in accordance with the schedule personally arranged, and mutually agreed to by the Associate Pastor of Administration or the Senior Pastor. Attendance at Church meetings, staff meetings, staff development days, staff retreats (overnight), and leadership summits, and other major events, which fall on weekends, holidays, early mornings, or evenings, in excess of (15-20) hours, is part of and/or inherent in the jobin accordance with the needs of the Church, a department’s operational requirements, or special events.
