Top Tips for Planning a Lesson

  1. Two heads are better then one! The Youth Dreamer family will assign you a Youth Dreamer teenage volunteer to help you with you class. Our goal is to have classes taught by youth. Make sure to make them a true part of your teaching (please don’t have them just pass out stuff and stand there!).
  1. Keep your goals in mind! Where will your workshop begin and end? Is this clear to the students? Is the rest of your workshop in a logical order? Does it start with a pop and go out with a bang? These things will help your program run smoothly and invite positive attitudes and behaviors.
  1. Give energy to get energy! Now as hard as teaching is, it doesn’t have to be boring! When teaching, be peppy! And act excited (if you’re not already) about being there, because if your students see you’re not very excited about being there, then they won’t be either, and might not want to come back.
  1. Vary your teaching and make sure it is active! Don’t just stand in the front. Allow students to be involved, let them get up and move, put them in pairs or groups to work, etc.
  1. Students leave first! Wait with your students until their parents arrive. Not only do you wait with the students to ensure safety but to meet the parents, and put in a good word for yourself and our youth center. And also to see if the parents have any questions for you regarding the class, you or even other students that might be causing problems for their child.
  1. Leave a clean classroom! The Youth Dreamers will only have a part time janitor that will be doing minor little work around our youth center, and we want to make sure he/she’s job is very simple and not aggravating. Plus, it’s always good not to leave a mess for someone who could be using the room next.
  1. Locking up! If you know for a fact that you will be the last one leaving or know someone else in the building that is, then make sure to lock up everything tight and not to leave anything behind that could be misplaced or stolen. That unfortunately would be your mistake and your responsibility.
  1. The students KNOW what works and what doesn’t. When the time for your course to end comes around, get evaluations, hold a small discussion that will help you improve your program and help you make the decision to come back and join us next year. They’re not only good for helping you to decide whether you want to do it again next year, but also for what you would want to change or keep the same. Feedback is always good to have; it makes the planning process easier.
  1. Overplan!!! You never want to be stuck with extra time at the end; better to be able to carry something over to the next class. That is why a detailed plan is better…make sure your application is totally complete. And if you don’t get to everything you can always request extra days and time periods to teach.
  1. [this one is for only IF we decide to have a joke shop] The Store Staff ARE THE STORE STAFF. Please do not try to get store staff to look after your students and duties, because that’s not what the store staff are there for.
