Providence Care, Kingston is south eastern Ontario’s leading provider of specialized mental health care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, specialized geriatric services, complex continuing care, palliative care and long-term care and is a major center for health education and research.
Special features of Providence Care’s Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs include:

  • Exploration of how diverse beliefs affect spiritual health of persons and families experiencing chronic health challenges
  • Opportunities to develop and sustain therapeutic relationships over longer periods of time
  • Development of professional and personal identity in light of Canada’s expanding religious pluralism and the widening split between religious involvement and spirituality
  • Facility-to-community continuum of care focus that matches emerging trends in Canadian health care
  • Participation as members of interdisciplinary teams while ministering to persons and loved ones
  • Learning about emerging new approaches to Advance Care Planning
  • Development of a new Spiritual Health Assessment tool in preparation for integration into Providence Care’s new Electronic Patient Record (ePR)
  • Innovative research to help students become familiar with research-informed spiritual health

Programs
As a faith-based organization, Providence Care provides a rich and welcoming environment for students to explore and engage in diverse theological, value-based education. Learning is designed to be transferable to various contexts: parish ministry, future ministry in community settings, clinical practice for healthcare professionals, preparation for certification as a Specialist by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care, and registration with the future College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.

Basic CPE Intensive Course / Monday to Friday full days / 13 May – 26 July 2013
Advanced CPE Extended Course / Two days per week / 16 Sept 2013 – 08 Apr 2014

Teaching Supervisors
Rev. Dr. Neil Elford is a CASC certified CPE Teaching Supervisor and PCE Teaching Supervisor. He holds Doctor of Ministry, Master of Divinity and Bachelor of Arts degrees and is ordained by the United Church of Canada. He is the Director for Spiritual Health, Mission and Ethics at Providence Care. His specific strengths in supervision lie in the integration of personal and professional identity. He has a strong background in personality theory, having done his doctoral studies in the integration of spirituality in the pastoral identity development of CPE students. Students experience Neil as approachable, authentic, direct and patient.
Robert Mundle, MDiv, STM, ThM, is a Provisional CPE Supervisor within CASC and is a board certified chaplain with the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (USA). His clinical work is in palliative care, specialized geriatrics, and complex continuing care. His research interests include religious pluralism and pastoral identity in multifaith and postmodern contexts, narrative ethics, and theologies of disability and rehabilitation.
Spiritual Health Staff
There are 4 additional full-time Spiritual Health staff members providing care in Providence Care. Students will be working and learning alongside these clinicians in the clinical programs of Providence Care.
