THESIS

The Skin Investigation Society

THESIS Library

The Skin Investigation Society Library was established in 1992, and provides a fascinating historical resource for dermatologists and researchers interested in the skin sciences.

In 1991, a letter was written to all B.A.D. members to announce the establishment of THESIS and to ask those that had written an M.D. thesis if they would consider donating the thesis to The Skin Investigation Society Library. There was a positive and enthusiastic response and the formation of the THESIS Library was announced in the B.A.D. Newsletter in December 1991:

Thesis Library

I am delighted to announce the formation of the THESIS Library, to be housed in an elegant room at the B.A.D. Offices in London.

The aim of THESIS (The Skin Investigation Society) is to encourage Dermatology Registrars, Senior Registrars and new Consultants to pursue a theme of research, hopefully towards a higher degree.

Having held our 1st meeting of THESIS in June, the THESIS Library is another way of helping to achieve our aims. There are over a hundred B.A.D. members who have a higher (MD/DM, PhD/D.Phil, MSc/M.Phil) degree, and the intention is to form a library of dermatology theses (past, present and future).

Such a collection could be consulted from time to time by those

interested in the subject or perhaps by those designing their own thesis. This arrangement would offset the age-old problem of people spending hours, usually with great pride, carefully putting together a thesis, only to gather dust (often unread) in some inaccessible University Library basement. In addition, we are collecting summaries of B.A.D. members’ theses for historical reasons.

I recently circulated about 170 B.A.D. members, known to have higher

degrees, and received some very positive replies. One wonderful man

has already bequeathed his thesis in his will!

I shall be writing again soon to those individuals who are willing to

donate a copy of their thesis to the library. Theses should be sent to:

The THESIS Library was initially established at the B.A.D. offices in St Andrew’s Place and later moved to Fitzroy Square, London. The library is supported entirely by THESIS funds. The current list of theses is shown on the THESIS website.

“MDs from the THESIS Library”

The slides below are taken from a talk to the Dowling Club given by Clive Archer in February 2004, entitled: “MDs from the THESIS Library”. At that stage there were 101 theses in the Library, including 91 MDs, 7 PhDs, one MSc and two essays, dating back to 1939.

Those wishing to donate a copy of their thesis should write to Dr Clive B Archer at Bristol Dermatology Centre, Bristol Royal Infirmary (UBHT), Bristol, BS2 8HW or at .
