The Silk Road Project: Yesterday and Today

Order of Activities

Step one: Materials Needed

  1. Two page map (you will tape the map together to create one large map).
  2. Silk Road Tour Graphic Organizer
  3. Four sheets of blank white paper

Step two: Map Activity

Using your map (you should have taped the map together to make one large map), label the physical features listed on the website. There are three links on the website to resources you may use in labeling the map. Make sure you spell the names correctly and use capital letters.

Step three: Virtual Tour

There are two things you will be responsible for during this part of the activity.

  1. Filling out the graphic organizer as you look at the different locations.
  2. Creating a map key of the goods and ideas you come across at the different locations.

Graphic organizer:

  1. Using the above website, click the links to the 7 different locations along the Silk Road
  2. Watch the videos and read the articles at each location. Fill in the graphic organizer with the appropriate information. Name more than one good/idea traded at each location.

Map Key:

  1. As you visit each location on the virtual tour, create a map key using one sheet of blank paper and your map. At the location use a symbol that represents what was traded at that location and then list it on the corresponding map key.

Step four: Foldable Illustrated Report- The Silk Road

Directions to Create Foldable:

  1. Take three sheets of white paper.
  2. Stagger them on top of each other.
  3. Fold in half so that there is an equal distance between all of the pages.
  4. Staple at the top, making sure all pages are lined up and included in the staple.

What to include in your report:Use the information you gathered on your organizer and map.

  1. Title page- The Silk Road: Yesterday and Today. Use photos or drawings to show locations or goods traded on the Silk Road. Your first and last name and block # should also be on this page.
  2. The Silk Road: Locations. List and describe the 7 locations along the Silk Road. Your descriptions should give reasons why these locations were important.
  3. The Silk Road: Yesterday. Using illustrations and descriptions, describe goods and ideas traded along the Silk Road in ancient times. Describe specific groups of people that used the Silk Road to share those goods and ideas.
  4. The Silk Road: Today. Using illustrations and descriptions, describe goods and ideas traded along the Silk Road in modern times. Describe specific groups of people that used the Silk Road to share those goods and ideas.
  5. The Silk Road: Effect. In a conclusive paragraph, explain how the Silk Road has affected the world in ancient and modern times.
  6. Resources: List the website title and website used to gather this information.
