THE SHELFORD FEAST

CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

  1. The only Feast event specifically for children is the ‘Kids Disco’, normally held on the Monday evening of Feast Week. This year there will be one disco for pupils up to (and no older than) KS1 and KS2 age. The event is run by the Shelford and Stapleford School PTAs, although it is advertised locally on notice boards round the Shelfords and Stapleford, and also specifically via email to the school office at Hauxton primary school. At other events, the Shelford Feast does not offer any specific facilities for the supervision of children and their parents or accompanying adults (e.g. in the case of the SYD event or on Feast Day) retain responsibility for them.
  2. The disco is held in the main marquee and organised so that ‘one-to-one’ situations between an unsupervised adult and an unaccompanied child can not occur (i.e. parents are distributed around the marquee within sight of other parents and the designated adults supervising the event).
  3. Children of both Key Stages, as well as pre-schoolers attending the disco, must be supervised either by their parents (or a responsible adult authorised by a parent), where the supervision level is a maximum of 4 children to one adult. These supervising adults must stay on site for the duration of the event and are responsible for their own children (and those children whom they have been authorised to care for) at all times, including the need to evacuate the marquee in an emergency. This supervision ratio must be communicated to Shelford and Stapleford School by email/via newsletters. It is also stated on posters advertising the event.
  4. Children are not allowed to leave the marquee or the adjoining fenced area (which includes the toilets) at any time without being accompanied by their parent (or a responsible adult authorised by their parent). Children of appropriate age may go to the toilets unaccompanied, with permission from their parent or the responsible adult authorised by their parent. The toilets are within the enclosed area at the front of the entrance to the Feast marquee. No child can therefore leave the disco via the toilet facilities. CRB checked PTA volunteers will make regular checks of the toilets.
  5. At least fourdesignated supervising adults must be on duty at any time and these designated supervisors will be CRB checked[1](although it is not necessary for all accompanying parents to be CRB checked).
  6. At least twoof the supervising adults must remain until all the children have left with their parent/named carers.

Review of this policy: May 2014 or earlier in the light of further guidance/new developments.

[1]As the Kids’ Disco is not ‘frequent’ (defined by the CRB website as once a week) or ‘intensive’ (defined as no more than 2 days in any period of 30 days) itis not believed to be a Regulated Activity and therefore, according to the CRB website, the Shelford Feast has discretion to accept a CRB check obtained for another activity or occupation, providing the check is at the ‘enhanced’ level and currently valid. DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) checks replaced CRB checks in 2012.
