DREAMLAND. MARGATE
After a triumphant eleven-year long ‘Save Dreamland’ campaign by The Dreamland Trust and the local community, a re-imagined Dreamland, Margate is set to open in 2015 as a major UK visitor attraction and leisure complex.
The vision is to provide entertainment for everyone through re-inventing the seaside amusement park experience. Dreamland will be a quintessentially British visitor attraction with wide appeal that reaches out to families, art lovers, heritage hunters and anyone looking for a unique day out.
Award winning multi-disciplinary designers HemingwayDesign led by Wayne Hemingway MBE, Gerardine Hemingway MBE and Jack Hemingway have been appointed to deliver the look, feel, smell, taste and sound of Dreamland. They will help to create a unique vintage-style amusement park withhistoric thrill rides, classic side shows, eateries and evocative spaces, set within a landscape capable of hosting national festivals, major events to celebrate the history of popular British culture, music, film and design.
The new Dreamland will be a visual and sensual delight, delivered by creative thinkers and designers who will ensure every nook and cranny is touched by the hands of an artist or artisan. With a creative use of up-cycled amusement park artefacts and fairground paraphernalia, there will be exciting serendipity and curatorial twists around every corner.
The 16-acre amusement park will also house three listed structures and a collection of heritage assets, including the restored Grade II* -listed Scenic Railway – Britain’s oldest rollercoaster, 15 rides dating back to the 1920s – many of which are the last remaining examples of their kind in the world – from the 1950s Hurricane Jets, the original Dreamland Gallopers, the Double Deckers and the much loved Caterpillar; 1870s Grade II-listed menagerie cages – the last of their kind in the world, classic side shows, destination dining and evocative spaces drawing on Dreamland’s legacy throughout the decades.
