The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey

WTA Summer Reading

We want you to enjoy your summer, but we also want you to become better readers and more effective users of the Warrior Tech principles of TRUST, RESPECT, and RESPONSIBILITY. In addition, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens should never bore you because it’s all about the most interesting subject in the world: YOU!

Your assignments aredue on the first day of school (August 10, 2017), so do not wait until August 8th or 9th to begin this process. You will get a lot more out of the reading if you take your time and read over the summer. The assignments may be typed or handwritten, but they must be neat and in order. Your first grade of the 2016-2017 school year will be attached to this assignment…and it will apply to multiple learning outcomes. We will use and refer to this book throughout the year, so it is important to the success of your year in WTA that you come prepared by having read.

In addition, culture weeks will directly correlate with this book. (For rising WTA students, culture weeks are non-instructional days where we spend time building and reinforcing WTA principles and values.)

  • ACTIVITY ONE: DO THIS BEFORE READING. Complete the 7 Habits Profile. (Downloadable)
  • ACTIVITY TWO:DO THIS DURING READING.At the end of each chapter, there is a list of something Stephen Covey calls “baby steps.” He says these are “small, easy steps that you can do immediately to help you apply what you just read. Though small, these steps can become powerful tools in helping you achieve your larger goals.”

Choose at least two baby steps from the end of each chapter. Perform them. Keep a written record of the baby steps that you performed. Use the following format

One Baby Step Per Page
Title of Chapter (for example, Part I: The Set-Up)
Baby Step # (for example, Baby Step #10)
Tell what the baby step is (for example, The next time you’re in a tough situation and don’t know what to do, ask yourself, “What principle should I apply (i.e., honestly, love, loyalty, hard work, patience)?” Follow that principle and don’t look back.)
Write a paragraph (or more) that tells how you worked this baby step into your life. (Feel free to come back and add to your writing as time goes on.)
  • ACTIVITY THREE: Complete “The Great Discovery” and write a personal mission statement draft. (Downloadable)
