THE SERPICO STAR Edition 14.5

November 21 & 22nd

Food Drive: Only 2 days left to send in your canned food donations (I thought it ended last Friday, but it actually ends this Tuesday). If the school can collect at least 2,600 items then Mr. Proctor and Mr. Siner will dress up as trolls and lip sync for the entire school. I don’t know about the students, but I REALLY want to see this! Unofficially, I think our class has brought in the most donations so far. Thank you!!

Since this is a short week, Friday Folders will not be sent home again until December 2nd.

Ray Skillman Charity Event: The Extended Learning classes will be taking a field trip to Kohl’s on Wednesday, December 7th to help make the holidays a little brighter for those who are less fortunate than us. Students, along with their parent chaperones will be given a child/children to shop for. Sizes, interests, favorite colors, etc. and budget amounts will be provided. It is such a wonderful and humbling experience to watch our students take on the role of shopper, and listen as they work together to figure out how to get the most for their dollars. As a way to say thank you for helping with this annual charity event, Ray Skillman will be providing a pizza lunch to the class when we return. To really help the students get into the holiday spirit for this charity event, I am encouraging them to dress in the favorite holiday attire. So pull out those Christmas sweaters and Santa hats because we’re going to spread some Christmas cheer throughout the store!!!! Parent chaperones…..please feel free to join in! Just a reminder to anyone wanting to chaperone must have a current background check on file.

Absences: Just a friendly reminder that if your child is going to be absent from school, remember to call the attendance line to report it (885-5653 option 1). I would appreciate a heads up as well (ext. 6226 or email). On that same note, if your child has an appointment and will need to leave early, please let me know ahead of time so that I can have time to get their assignments together. This will make it less disruptive when it comes time for them to leave.

HERE’S WHAT IS GOING ON IN ROOM 26 THIS WEEK:

Literature: Reading of and comprehension questions for Chapter 9 – 11 (Island of the Blue Dolphins) will be assigned this week. Questions will be due on Monday 11/28. Students will also have time to work on their Travel Brochures, which are due on 11/29.

Math: On Monday we will cover lesson 3, Write & Solve Addition & Subtraction Equations. On Tuesday the students will have an in-class assignment over lessons 1 – 3. This assignment will be recorded in the gradebook.

Investigations: Last Friday The EL classes began 2 new Science units: Geology and Oceanography. Students were divided and half will begin with one of the unit topics. After 10 days/class periods students will switch topics. I am teaching Geology and Mr. Dooms is teaching Oceanography. Remember to check Mr. Doom’s web page for Oceanography assignments. In Geology this week, students have a “Changes to the Surface of the Earth” flipbook that is due on Tuesday 11/22. We will also learn about “Mountains, Volcanoes, and Earthquakes”. Just a heads up - there will be a test over Chapter 1 on Tuesday, November 29th.

Communications: In writing this week, students will learn the format for opinion/persuasive/argumentative writing.
