The State of New Jersey’s Higher Education Student Assistance Authority announced the names of the 34 ColumbiaHigh School students selected for inclusion in the New Jersey Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholars Program for the 2010-11 collegiate academic year.Approximately 5,000 New Jersey students were honored for their high academic standing.The students must rank in the top ten percent of the class withcombined critical reading and math SAT scores of 1260 or higher at the end of their junior year. If these students choose to attend college in New Jersey, they will be eligible for scholarships. The following are the students selected for this award:

The ColumbiaHigh School Student Council received two awards at the State Student Council Meeting held at The College of New Jersey. For the third year in a row, the CHS Student Council won in the category of “Top Ten Projects” and for the fourth year was named an “HonorSchool.” The Student Council advisors received pins for their distinguished years of service,
Ms. Hannah Edelman for twenty years and Ms. Beth Dalzell for eight years. At the event, CHS Student Council members led two workshops, one on “How to Run a Pep Rally” and the other on “How to Run a Blood Drive.”

The CHS literary magazine, Guildscript, received a first place award in the very competitive 2009 American Scholastic Press Association competition. The editors-in-chief are Emily Hahlbeck and Hillary Knecht, both 2009 graduates. The advisors are Ms. Mary Brancaccio, CHS English teacher, and Ms.Cindy Malhotra, CHS graphic arts teacher.

The Pierro Gallery at the Baird in South Orange is currentlyfeaturing the art work of the South Orange-Maplewood School District’s art faculty in a show entitled “Reaching Out, Reaching In” through February 21.The group show demonstrates the diverse and professional talents of the art staff who are professional artists in their own right. Ms. Judy LoBianco is the recipient of the Dr. Everett Hebel Award given toacknowledge theNew Jersey State Supervisor of the Year. The New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NJAHPERD) presents this award to the school supervisor who displays outstanding contributions to quality physical education and exemplary leadership within a school setting. Ms. LoBianco will receive this award at a dinner on January 25th.

Coach Dave Curtin announced that Columbia seniorChidozie Diala and Columbia junior Denzel Nieves were selected as Super 100Football Players by the NJ Football Coaches Association. They will receive this recognition at a dinner in February.

The CHS Boys Fencing Team placed first in the state Cetrulo Tournament and the CHS Girls Fencing Team placed second in the state Santelli Tournament.Mr.Daryl White is the fencing coach.

The CHS girls track team, under the leadership of Coach Lisa Morgan, placed first in the Essex County Relay competition.
