1. Brief overview

Give a brief overview of your program and its goal in your library community, and your target audiences. Be sure to explain how your National Library Week program will use the “Create your own story @ your library®” theme. (NOTE: Failure to use this theme, including the trademarked @ your library® logo, will immediately disqualify your application.)

Over the past year FayetteCounty has been hit hard by the current economic recession. In the summer of 2009 FayetteCounty residents watched as three of the major employers of the community left to pursue business opportunities in other states and countries. DHL, Calmar and Johnson Controls left thousands without employment, and most of their former employees had been in positions with the company for 25 to 30 years. With job loss at an all time high and unemployment holding at 11.2% the residents of this community often find providing day to day necessities to be a struggle. Bearing witness to this reality, Southern State Community College has partnered with Carnegie Public Library, Miami Trace Schools, Washington Court House City Schools, the FayetteChristianSchool, and Fayette Works One Stop in order to cultivate consciousness in the community of the library being a valuable resource for new beginnings.

“Creating your own story @ your library” is a platform for promoting library services that can help the residents of FayetteCounty start a new chapter in their life. Activities that we have planned for National Library Week are to focus on the community as a whole, from the children to the adults; they all have had to “recreate” themselves in a way to cope with this continually changing environment. We have planned a local job fair which will run for an entire day consisting of local businesses that are in need of employees as well as people to assist with resume writing and interview skills.

In correlation to the job fair we are also planning a presentation, Job Search on the Web. This presentation is designed to guide participants through the entire process of searching and applying for employment utilizing electronic methods. The outcome for this activity is to assist and register 100 FayetteCounty residents on Ohiomeansjobs.com.

To highlight the positive aspects of the community we have also planned a “Gallery Night” showcasing art work of all mediums from preschool through college students as well as local talented adults. In addition to featuring the works of art, there will also be light refreshments, music and an onsite caricature artist for all to enjoy. We have also planned a puppet show presented by Mad Cap Puppets to entertain the children and seminars on life success (based on the College Success class principles), graphic novels and beautifying the community through gardening.

We plan on utilizing local papers, radio, posters, the college’s web site and Facebook for advertising starting the end of February and running through National Library Week in April.

2. Objectives of program

The libraries of our community will be viewed as a resource to research new career paths, stimulate the imagination, discover new hobbies or interests to pursue, and a stable element of exploration that actively contributes to the growth of FayetteCounty. The timeline of events planned for the week is listed below. The week will consist of a public job fair for potential job seekers to be exposed to employers, educational facilities and experts in the field of career achievement. A program addressing the issues associated with the ‘virtual’ job search and the new world of technology and employment. We will feature a lecture series on achieving success in life based on the Colle ge Success program that is facilitated at Southern State Community College. In addition to this lecture series we have planned for lectures regarding careers ‘outside the box’ featuring people who have made a career out of a talent or interest. Explain how you will evaluate the effectiveness of your program for 1) National Library Week and 2) the long-term goals of increased support and visibility for your library.

The success of the Fayette County National Library Week activities will be measured by the number of attendees and the responses of the program evaluations returned. Attendees will be counted by use of sign-in sheets and head counts, depending on the audience. Adults will be asked to ‘sign in’ to the event where as a count will be taken of the children. Evaluations will be distributed to adults and teens attending the job fair, lecture series and Gallery night. Our efforts will be considered a success if at least 70% of the returned evaluations are marked as ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’. Evaluations will also include space to enter contact information for notification of events held in the future.

7. Commitment

Describe your library's commitment to an ongoing public relations program.

Southern StateCommunity College’s commitment to the community is deeply embedded in fact that the Fayette Works One Stop is housed within the LRC itself. LRC staff members serve both students, faculty and One Stop patrons alike. All the libraries involved in this project have continuous activities throughout the year to benefit the community,

During National Library Week, the library will work with public and school libraries in the county to promote programs and the unique resources each library has to offer the community. The library will continue to work with its National Library Week partners throughout the year with activities such as, book, food and clothing drives, reading programs and awareness campaigns, creating a unified message about the role libraries play in serving the community.

Branching off its partnership during National Library Week the libraryThroughout the course of the What will make this undertaking extraordinary is simply the cooperation of all the libraries in the county for a single purpose. Our intent is that the organizations participating in our National Library Week activities will create a new chapter in FayetteCounty history by embarking on other community projects together in the future. This opportunity will hopefully, be the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership of the FayetteCounty libraries.
