Communications Intern

The role will be based in the AMAR Foundation’s London Office in Westminster.

Job Purpose:

The Communications Intern will assist the Communications Team in improving and growing digital and traditional communications channels for the AMAR Foundation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Communications Intern’s duties and responsibilities will include the following:

1.  Assisting in managing AMAR’s social media channels;

2.  Writing copy for AMAR’s website and assisting in the preparation of press releases;

3.  Collating invitation lists for AMAR events;

4.  Assisting in the development of digital newsletters;

5.  Tracking developments in Iraq/ relevant news stories;

6.  Providing research support;

7.  Working with AMAR’s Digital Communications Officer to organise AMAR’s digital archives;

8.  Undertaking any other ad-hoc tasks required in furtherance of the AMAR Foundation’s aims and objectives.

Desired Qualifications, Skills and/or Experience:

The following qualifications, skills and/or experience would be an advantage:

1.  Experience of communications either gained through education, training or work – a combination of all three would be desirable;

2.  Strong IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint;

3.  Experience using Social Media in a professional context;

4.  Experience using marketing platforms such as Mailchimp;

5.  Experience using Content Management Systems – ideally Wordpress;

6.  Photo and film editing skills an advantage;

7.  Experience of working in a high-pressure environment and as part of a team;

8.  Understanding of, and interest in, the Middle East region and culture;

9.  Arabic language would be an advantage, but not essential.

Conditions of Work:

The Communications Intern is an unpaid role.

Hours and days of work are flexible but it is expected that the successful candidate will work 3 days per week, normally between 0930hrs to 1730hrs, starting in May. Occasionally, the Communications Intern may be asked to work outside these hours in order to meet tight deadlines or to assist in out of hours activities. The internship is open-ended in duration, however it is expected that, in order to gain most from the position, it will last a minimum of 3 months.

The successful candidate must have the right to live and work in the UK. Applicants called for interview will be required to provide proof of residency (e.g. passport, birth certificate accompanied by photo ID and a valid visa if subject to immigration control) before the interview takes place.

Additional Information:

The Communications Intern will work directly with AMAR’s Head of Communications and Communications Officer in the London Office, primarily helping to boost AMAR’s public presence. Additional work may occasionally be required, for example assisting in fundraising events which are outside normal office hours.

Upon completion of the internship, the successful candidate will have gained a good understanding of the organisation of a busy charity, experience working as part of a busy communications team and the skills required to function in a wider office-based work environment.
