The Role of the Equality Named Co-Ordinator (ENCO)

Equality Named Co-Ordinator in the setting :Sue Brown

She has been designated, trained and supported to provide an equality lead in the setting.

Main Purpose of Role

  • To work collaboratively with colleagues and the Management Committee to develop and enhance the anti-discriminatory, rights and equality promoting inclusive practice of all practitioners in the setting;
  • To have a direct impact on equality practice for the sake of all children within the setting;
  • To be accountable for co-leading, managing and developing (with management) the equality and inclusion of all children, in line with the current statutory Early Years Foundation Stage, Equalities, Children’s Rights and Human Rights legislation and good practice;
  • To support parents/carers and staff in the setting to implement programmes that support all children in a rights respecting approach;
  • To work in collaboration with setting and area SENCO’s (Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinators) to promote the delivery of multi-strand equalities for Disabled children and their families.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • In partnership with children, families, staff and involved professionals, to agree appropriate interventions which will support and provide positive impact on the equality, inclusion, learning and development of individual children and their families;
  • To develop practical strategies which are tailored to the individual equality requirements of the child and their setting;
  • To empower all staff to take responsibility for effective anti-discrimination equality and Children’s Rights practice, diversity and inclusion of all children;
  • To secure anti-discrimination, equality, inclusion and children’s rights training for the setting;
  • To assist raising the setting’s and staff’s awareness of the latest policies, legislation and curriculum initiatives in relation to equality and human rights, early years equality, social cohesion, inclusion and anti-discrimination;
  • To ensure that the setting has relevant written policies, procedures and individual equality plans that are acted upon, reviewed, monitored and evaluated;
  • To support the setting in provided evidence to Ofsted and other regulatory bodies on how the setting is meeting its equalities, anti-discrimination, inclusion and rights respecting responsibilities;
  • To promote the equality aspects of well being principles;
  • To promote the setting’s work within the context of community and social cohesion;
  • To promote consideration and adherence to the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child 1989 and to the Government’s Early Support Programme;
  • To monitor discriminatory incidents and to work in collaboration with relevant people or agencies to share this information, signpost victims and to redress matters if possible in a whole team/setting approach;
  • To attend local ENCO Network meetings.

Job Activities

  • To work with colleagues in a culturally sensitive and competent way with all children in the setting to meet their unique needs in compliance with the requirements of the Early Years Framework;
  • To work with colleagues in a culturally sensitive and competent way with families to promote positive outcomes for their children;
  • To offer information about the range of expertise upon which the setting might draw, and advice on when it is appropriate to do so;
  • To provide opportunities for parents/carers and staff to discuss and have information on all matters of equalities/rights and anti-discrimination in practice and policy;
  • To participate as appropriate in meetings and other relevant events which relate to the role of the ENCO;
  • To identify and participate in strategies and practices for addressing organisational equality requirements and information gaps on current issues.

Managing Relationships

  • To demonstrate appropriate respect for confidentiality and be open and honest about where this cannot be supported;
  • To appropriately manage conflict situations which may arise as a result of challenges to equality delivery and ethos. To deal with this within agreed and effective strategies to ensure personal and organisational safety, legal compliance and creditability whilst reinforcing no compromise on anti-discrimination, rights and equalities. To ensure professionalism at all times.
