The Road to the Rostow Cup

AP Human Geography Fantasy Development League

The Road to the Rostow Cup is just like a fantasy sports league, but instead of drafting players that will score points based on athletic performance, you will be drafting countries that will score points based on their level of development. Below is a sample of how this will look and how the scoring is based.

Team: We’re Gonna Kick Your Djibouti

Country / GNI
(GNIPPPxPop) / GNIPPP / Life Expectancy / % Urban / IMR / NIR / TFR
Central Korea / $57 billion / $27,000 / 74.6 / 88.7% / 8 / 1.2 / 2.7

Team: We’ll ToponymYa Over

Country / GNI
(GNIPPPxPop) / GNIPPP / Life Expectancy / % Urban / IMR / NIR / TFR
EquitorialKundu / $84 billion / $23,000 / 72.3 / 91.3% / 9 / 1.4 / 2.4

Scoring:

For categories GDP-% Urban, you want the higher number, for categories IMR-TFR you want the lower number. For each category that you beat your opposing country position, you earn a point. The above line-ups from above are displayed below with the scoring categories for each team being highlighted in bold font.

For this country category, Central Korea outscored European Kundu by a score of 4-3. In the game, you will have an entire line-up of countries from different categories which will be scored head-to-head like the example above. The team that has most overall points will win and advance to the next round.

Sample Line-up:

Displayed below is what your line-up will look like for each game. The flex position can have a country from any category in it. Note that you will need a maximum of three line-ups to advance to/win the championship, however, a country can only be used once in the tournament. This means that each of your line-ups will be completely different.

Drafting Countries:

On the following pages are the list of countries that you can draft along with the regions in which they are located. Note, that you will need to draft enough countries from each region to be able to fill out three separate line-ups. This means that you will need, at minimum, the following:

  • Europe – 3
  • Africa – 3
  • Latin America - 3
  • Asia – 3
  • Flex – 3

You may draft more than the minimum number from each region as you will need to fill out your flex spots and bench spots.

Below is the sheet that you will use and fill-in during the draft. Only one per group needs to be filled out. During the draft, please pay attention to which countries have been picked and cross them off on the previous list as they are selected. Don’t be that person that says that they’ll pick Finland in the 6th round when it was taken several rounds earlier.
