This log book has been designed to comply with the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and includes sections required to be kept by the Act.

1. NOTES ON COMPLETION OF THE FIRE LOG BOOK

The log book should be maintained by a responsible person in the premises concerned and kept in an easily accessible position within the premises.

1. Training of Employees

Record here all persons who have received training in the use of fire extinguishers and aspects of fire precautions or cross reference to where the records are kept.

2. Details of Fire Equipment

All fire equipment, its type and location, should be recorded here.

3. Fire Equipment Testing

This will be completed by the approved contractor.

4. Details of Fire Evacuations or Practices

Record here details of any fire evacuation or fire practice undertaken on the premises, making any necessary comments in the appropriate column, In the column headed 'Roll Call Taken' record here either 'Yes' or 'No'.

5. Testing of Fire Alarms, Smoke and Heat Detectors, Automatic Door Releases and Pressurised Staircases.

Persons in charge of premises should record only details of manual alarm tests and automatic door test, having first made sure that the automatic alarm does not turn out the Fire Service. Manual alarm call points should be checked on a weekly basis, in rotation.

6. Emergency Lighting

Where emergency lighting systems are checked by authorised engineers, electricians, or authorised contractors, a note only to this effect should be recorded in this log book, stating by whom, e.g. Building Section electrician, and date of inspection, if known.

7.Defective Equipment

Record here any item of fire equipment found to be defective or thought to malfunction, and ensure that it is reported immediately.

In the case of:

8. TRAINING OF EMPLOYEES

All employees should receive a period of instruction by a competent person and thereafter at intervals as required by the fire certificate, or as may be deemed to be necessary, which should include: -

1. the action to be taken on discovering a fire; 5. the location and use of fire fighting equipment;

2. the action to be taken on hearing the fire alarm; 6. knowledge of escape routes;

3. raising the alarm, including the location of fire alarm call points,7. importance of fire doors and their use;

internal fire alarm telephones and alarm indicator panels; 8. stopping machines and processes;

4. correct method of calling the fire brigade; 9. evacuation of buildings, in particular where members of the public are concerned.

9. ACTION IN THE EVENT OF FIRE

1.Raise the alarm - break the nearest fire alarm call point glass.

2.Call the Fire Service - Dial 999.

3.If possible, tackle the fire with the appliances provided.

DO NOT TAKE RISKS.

4.Evacuate the building by the nearest available exit - make sure any visitors leave with you.

5. Go to your designated assembly area outside the building and report to the person responsible for the roll call.

6. The designated person should complete a roll call and report the result to the Fire Officer on his arrival.

DO NOT STOP TO COLLECT PERSONAL BELONGINGS.

DO NOT USE LIFTS.

DO NOT RE-ENTER THE BUILDING UNTIL AUTHORISED TO DO SO BY THE SAFETY OFFICER OR FIRE OFFICER.

10. FIRE PRECAUTIONS SAFETY CHECKLIST.

1.Do not allow rubbish, wastepaper or other materials to accumulate in or near to the building.

2.Flammable materials should be stored safely and kept to a minimum.

3.Worn electric wiring, damaged plugs or wall sockets should be reported immediately and repairs carried out by an authorised person.

4.Turn off electrical equipment when not in use (unless it is designed to be permanently connected).

5.Ensure that combustible materials are not left near sources of heat.

6.Make sure that machinery or office equipment is well ventilated and regularly cleaned.

7.All work areas should be kept clean and tidy.

8.All halls, corridors and staircase enclosures should be kept unobstructed.

In particular, deliveries of materials and equipment should not be allowed to remain in locations where they will obstruct exits or the routes leading to them.

9.Fire doors should not be wedged open.

10.Contractors carrying out repairs/work in the building should be booked in and out again when they leave. Wherever possible the area in which they have been working should be inspected immediately on their departure and again approximately half an hour after they have left.

11.Staff should be encouraged to bring any hazard to the attention of their supervisor or manager

12.Fire extinguishers need to be recharged even if they have been only partially discharged.

Arrangements for the recharging or servicing of extinguishers should be made through the Health & Safety Section.
