The Projects for the Above Genres Are As Follows

An important component to learning about different genres of literature is to read from many different types. This Passport to Reading will give you another opportunity to explore another genre. You will have approximately five weeks to read a novel or non-fiction book and complete a project based upon what you have read.

For this Passport you can choose to read one of the following genres: adventure or classics. You select ONE of these genres; choose a book to read which you have approved by me (not another teacher) and complete the required project listed below. There is also a written component that is the same for all genres which includes a response and genre evidence sheet which is included in this packet.

The projects for the above genres are as follows:

GENRE: CLASSICS ACTIVITY: Design a CD Cover

v  Imagine you have been assigned to create a music CD for your book.

v  Make a CD cover that is related to the story.

v  You will need an empty CD case for this assignment.

v  Decide on a title for your CD that incorporates the main character’s name. Include a hand drawn illustration of the person doing something related to one of the main events of the story. Color your cover.

v  On another square, make up ten song titles that include facts about the character and their story. On a separate piece of paper, give an explanation for each song title. This should include how the events of the story relate to each song title, the character’s reaction to the event and how the event impacted the story.

v  Make a hand drawn illustration for the back cover that relates to one of the song titles. Color your illustration.

v  Display your CD cover in an empty CD case

v  Don’t forget to complete the response section and genre rationale before passing in your assignment.

GENRE: ADVENTURE ACTIVITY: Adventure Brochure
v  Imagine that you are setting up an adventure like the one that took place in your novel.

v  Fold a piece of 8½ x 11 paper in thirds.

v  Create a brochure that would make people interested in going on the adventure.

v  Include in your brochure information about the location, available activities, skills people will learn, sleeping/eating/bathing facilities, and any special features of the location.

v  Brochure should include at least 3-5 pictures or diagrams, which may be hand drawn or computer generated

v  Be creative. Your brochure should be colorful and informative.

v  Don’t forget to complete the response section and genre rationale before passing in your assignment.

WRITTEN RESPONSE AND GENRE EVIDENCE

Response Section

Must include the following:

§  What you liked

§  What you didn’t like

§  What emotions you experienced while reading the book

§  Whether the you would recommend the book to other people

§  Each of these must be supported with examples from the book.

Genre Evidence:

Must include the following:

§  At least three examples that makes it clear this novel represents the genre you have chosen for the month

§  Examples from the book to support your thinking

General Notes:

§  The response and genre rational sections of your passport must be in complete sentences.

§  These sections will be marked for spelling, grammar and neatness. Complete a rough copy of your writing before doing your final copy.

§  Responses must fit within the given space. No additional pages can be added.

§  All illustrations must be hand drawn unless otherwise stated.
