THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE: USE (WHEN?) (SB, p. 178 – 179)

1. a. The plane has just taken off.

b. I’ve just washed my hair.

c. My parents are furious because I’ve lost the car keys. (result  I don’t have them now.)

We use the Present Perfect Tense without time expression to talk about ……………

2. a. She has won three Oscars. (Up to now in her life. She can win some more.)

b. Nick Hornby has written 3 novels Shakespeare wrote many plays.

We use the Present Perfect Tense to express an action …………………………………

Common adverbs: ever (in questions) and never.

3. a. Sue has already seen that film.

e. I’ve always hated computers, but my son has often talked about buying one.

We use the Present Perfect Tense for past actions in a period of time up to the present, with words like lately, recently, always, often, (not) yet, already.

We use the Present Perfect Tense with today, this morning, this month, this year, …. but only to talk about a period of time that hasn’t finished yet.

6. Been or gone?

Tom has been to Paris.=> He went to Paris but now he is back.

(expresses an experience some time in his life)

Alan has gone to South America.=> He is in South America now.

(expresses a past action with a result in the present)
