The Prayer of Agreement

1.Goal

God’s people will appropriate the promise of God recorded in Matthew 18:18-20 regarding the prayer of agreement.

2.Introduction

Matthew 18:18-20 "Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19”Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20"For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." (NKJV)

God did not put all of the promises about prayer in the Bible just to fill up space. They are there for our benefit. They are there for us to act upon. There is tremendous power as two or more agree in prayer concerning anything they may need.

John 14:14"If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. (NKJV)

In the Greek language, this statement of Jesus is, “If you shall ask anything in My Name and I don’t have it, I will make it for you.”

3.Question

Why should you join a prayer meeting? Do you have prayer partners?

4.Content

A.Authority to bind and to loose

Matthew 18:18-20 "Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19"Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20"For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." (NKJV)

We usually apply these Scriptures to a church service. But what Jesus was really saying here is wherever two or three people are who agree, He is right there with them to make their prayer effective. Heaven will back us up when we agree in prayer. We have the authority to loose and to bind. We should not think that we cannot do anything about problems in life. We can do something about it by acting on these Scriptures: by agreeing in prayer with one other believer who we like minded. Remember what God promises us: “It will be done for you by My Father in heaven.” We have our part to play. When we make our move in the prayer of agreement, God will then move.

B.Multiplied prayer power

Deuteronomy 32:30 How could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Unless their Rock had sold them, And the LORD had surrendered them? (NKJV)

We may be mighty in prayer alone, but we can be mightier with another committed believer joining us. One can chase a thousand, but two can put ten thousand to flight. With someone agreeing with us in prayer, we can do ten times as much as we can do by ourselves. A lot of people do not need to be involved; just a husband and wife will do or just two or three believers who are united in their spirits.

C.Examples of benefits of the prayer of agreement

Acts 1:14, 24These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. 24And they prayed and said, "You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen. (NKJV)

The disciples were praying in agreement or in one accord. Verse 24 tells us that the power of agreement in prayer helps God’s people to make the right decision.

Acts 2:1-2 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. (NKJV)

Prayer in agreement brings the Holy Spirit to us in power and fullness. All revivals in the past were the outcome of agreement in prayer. Men and women got together and prayed for the power of God to move in. Agreement brings the Holy spirit and Revival.

Acts 3:1-6 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer --at three in the afternoon. 2Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" 5So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. 6Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."

Peter and John went up to the temple together to pray, the result was that a man was healed. In verse 4 Peter said, “look at us.” He did not say, “look on me.” Agreement in prayer brings miracles.
