Creative Drawing with Wayne Quackenbush

This class will come up with 7 words or phrases each week to stimulate the imagination. These prompts will form the basis for daily drawing. In class we will learn techniques for creative drawing, including visualization, blind folded drawing, using the non-primary hand, etc. this class will help you establish a daily drawing practice. We will share our work each week. Open to all media and skill levels.

Instructor: Wayne has a BFA from Pratt Institute with an emphasis on Drawing and Illustration. He owns and runs Annex Comics in Newport. This class is based upon the popular Art and Writing Challenges offered by Annex Comics on Facebook. See annexcomics.com

small Paintings-Big Art with kelley MacDonald

Create powerful, compelling paintings in a small format for show opportunities, sharing on social media, or as a way to move your art forward. We’ll complete exercises to produce a complete painting in a small format in about an hour. We’ll also discuss how to frame a small work.

Instructor: Kelley is an award-winning artist who works in oil and acraylics. She gives talks on blogging and consults on marketing art. She finds beauty in every glance and is constantly learning to express that beauty. kelleymacdonalddailypaint.blogspot..

Painting Portsmouth: going Beyond Local Color with aaron Sousa

For students of all levels and abilities, in these Sunday workshops we will explore the landscapes on Aquidneck Island. We will be going beyond the local color to express the “light key’ or the effect the time of day and atmospheric conditions have upon the local color. We will also discuss composition and design elements and drawing. We will be visiting a different location each Sunday. Open to watercolor, oils and acrylics.

Instructor: Aaron Sousa has his BFA in Painting and Art Education from UMass/Dartmouth and has studied at the historic Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Ma.

Tuition: $30 for 1 session, $55 for 2 sessions, $75 for 3 sessions (you may sign up for

any or all the sessions but you must pay and pre-register for the sessions you want)

Draw, then paint, the landscape with amy Bartlett Wright

Autumn in Rhode Island is the perfect time to paint outside when the landscape and light is magnificent. Students of any level are welcome to learn to draw and paint en plein air using ten simple rules for conveying distance. Beginners are encouraged to start with drawing. We will go over concepts such as value, amount of detail, composition and color and temperature.

Instructor: Amy Bartlett Wright holds a BA in Scientific Illustration from the University of Maryland. She is a well-known illustrator and muralist for science museums, zoos, nature centers and private homes. She is a member of the Society of Animal Artists and Oil Painters of America. www.amybartlettwright.com

Painting Portraits in 4 colors with Kathy Weber

Find out how easy it is to paint portraits when you use a limited palette of only 4 colors. This is the palette made famous by Anders Zorn. First we will create a color chart. Then we’ll paint from a model. You’ll see how effective these colors can be for flesh and hair colors. Oils and acrylics welcome. Some previous drawing or painting experience recommended.

Instructor: Kathy Weber has a BFA/Painting from UMass Dartmouth. She has won numerous awards and her work has been published in American Artsit Magazine. She has a background in commercial art illustration. See www.weberstudio.com.

Painting Water and Sky in Watercolor with

Celeste Chute-Wright

This is a beginner watercolor workshop. We will explore choices for brushes and paper and work with various techniques including washes and glazes. You will create a painting using reference photos of water and sky. Enjoy watercolor as you learn the fundamentals of this medium.

Instructor: Celeste has an art degree from UCC (NJ) and is an artist member of the Portsmouth Arts Guild and the East Greenwich Art Club. She enjoys painting and sharing her love of painting with others.

Open Figure Studio with Wayne Quackenbush

Join this 5 week open figure studio. Open to all mediums and skill levels. No instruction-simply an opportunity to paint or draw from live models in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The models may be clothed or nude. There will be a series of short and longer poses depending on the wishes of the group.

Friday Night Still Life with Dawn Temple

Come relax and unwind in this Friday night still life class. From fruit to flowers and more, still life drawing is a common thread throughout art history. Drawing from the still life allows you to examine the otherwise ordinary objects around you in order to create extraordinary art. Open to all drawing media. Have fun while you learn to master the still life. Light refreshments will be served.

Instructor: Dawn Temple is a visual artist and photographer whose work has been featured at various exhibits around Rhode Island. She has a BA in painting from RI College and has been instructing adults for years at various museums and art associations.

Art Journaling with Lisa Smith Arnold

Art journaling is done for many reasons-travel journals, dream journals-the list is endless. Why not record your thoughts and visually enhance them? This is not scrapbooking-it’s about designing a page around your text in different mediums. Draw and paint your thoughts, dreams and more in a journal as an artist’s way of speaking.

Instructor: Lisa Smith Arnold has a BFA from Syracuse University and studied art at the Art Students League in NYC. She worked at Conde Nast Publishing. She was creative coordinator, writer and illustrator for “You Know You’re Really Pregnant When” (Penguin Books) and “Drawing for Dummies” (Wiley Press).

Torn Paper Collage with Wanda Edwards

Similar to impressionists’ use of colors or the tiles in a mosaic. Torn Paper Paintings unconventional collage technique create this same visual interest. Small bits of handmade and hand-painted papers, rice paper, book pages, and maps, create the color palette from which the image is created. These segments come together to create the image like the dots of pointillism create their painting.

Instructor: Wanda attended night classes at RISD where she studied for 4 years in their Scientific and Technical Illustration program. She has worked for many years in various art-related fields. Her work is represented by the Little Beach Gallery in Hyannis and in the collection of the Weymouth and Dartmouth locations of the Boston Children’s Hospital. Articles on her work have been published in Cape Cod Magazine and Somerset Studios Magazine, among others.

Watercolor Basics with John tolley

Learn the basics of painting with watercolor in this fun, introductory class. We’ll work from a still life setup and you’ll come away with several finished paintings. This is a past time which will reward you with many hours of enjoyment to come. Beginners welcome.

Instructor: John Tolley didn’t pick up a paintbrush until later in life but has gone on to become an award-winning watercolorist. Become inspired to embark on your own journey to becoming an artist.

Dyeing your own silk scarves with Paulette La Parle

Learn the basics of hand dyeing silk scarves. You will dye the scarf using the shibori technique of twisting material to create an interesting effect. Hand painting technique with resist will also be taught. Come home with 2 beautiful scarves to keep or give as a gift. No experience necessary.

Instructor: Since retiring from public school teaching, Paulette has invested much of her time exploring new hobbies. Hand dyeing has become her latest interest.

Linoleum block Prints with Suzanne Lewis

Learn this simple printmaking technique which you can do at home without a press. Make bold, graphic designs similar to woodblock prints. Learn simple techniques for adding color. No drawing or printmaking experience necessary.

Instructor: an award-winning printmaker, suzanne Lewis has a Masters of Arts in Teaching form RI College and Certificate in Drawing and Painting Studies fro RISD Continuing Education Program. She has been studying printmaking for many years and enjoys learning and sharing with others new discoveries in this medium.

Tuition: $70/60 members ($10 materials fee to be paid to instructor in class)

Cancellation and Refund Policy: The Portsmouth Arts Guild reserves the right to cancel classes with insufficient enrollment. Refunds of 100% if class is canceled; 80% for withdrawal at least one week before start of the first class. No refunds after one week before the start of your class. Adult classes are open to ages 15 and up with permission of instructor. If student is a minor, parent/guardian will be asked to sign a waiver on the first day of class.
