1.Introduction

The Peninsula Upper GI (OG & HPB) Cancer Network Site Specific Group (NSSG) has been re-established, not having met for several years due to a national cut-back in network support. A Peninsula Cancer Network Manager and Administrative Support were funded for an initial year by the South West Strategic Clinical Network (SWSCN) and a bid for future funding submitted to participating trusts.

Despite the large geographical area covered by the NSSG, the group works very well together and has set up a strong clinical focus. Members are keen to share the outcomes of good practice and local developments which will enable the group to develop effective clinical pathways of care.

2.Network Configuration (14-1C-101f / 13-1C-101n)

The Peninsula Upper GI Cancer Network covers the total catchment population (1.718m) of the following organisations:

Organisation / Referring CCG
Plymouth Hospital NHS Trust / NEW Devon CCG
Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust / NEW Devon CCG
Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust / Kernow CCG
South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / South Devon & Torbay CCG
Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust / NEW Devon CCG

Note: NEW Devon CCG (Northern, Eastern and Western Devon CCG)

A further meeting was held on 30th September 2015. The 2016 meetings have been scheduled for 16th March and 28th September. 6.Clinical Guidelines (14-1C-105f / 13-1C-105n)

The group has reviewed the SWAG (Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire) Clinical Guidelines. These have been redrafted to reflect Peninsula requirements and will be taken to the March 2016 meeting for approval

7.Patient Pathways (14-1C-107f / 13-1C-107n)

A number of South West Network (Peninsula and SWAG) meetings have taken place during 2015 to develop a network pathway based on the NICE recommendations. Dates for 2016 meetings are:

·  Wednesday 13th January

·  Monday 8th February

·  Monday 14th March

·  Thursday 14th April

The OG Pathways included in the Consensus document are part of the network review and will include pathways for GIST and High / Low Grade Displasia. The HPB Pathways currently followed were agreed December 2104.

In addition a network-wide 2WW Proforma has been developed for each tumour site. The draft forms are currently being reviewed by GPs, CCGs and NSSG Chairs. When agreed they will be sent to trusts for sign off/implementation. There is concern that medical and surgical gastroenterology is all linked together for GP referral. To improve referrals need separate medical and surgical referrals and also need to split HPB and OG.

8.Audit (14-1C-109f / 13-1C-109n)

A review of local audits carried out in last five years will be carried out before decision on which new network wide audits should be undertaken.

9.Pancreatic Study Day

As part of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, Plymouth Hospitals Trust organised a study day on 23rd November 2015. Colleagues from across the network were invited to attend.

10.Patient Representation (14-1C-108f / 13-1C-108n)

Veronica Derby, a member of the Whipples Group, was welcomed to her first NSSG meeting as patient representative. It was noted that the Whipples Group is currently down to only eight members and three of these are interested in attending NSSG meetings and will rotate.

11.Living With and Beyond Cancer (14-1C-108f / 13-1C-108n)

The ‘Living With and Beyond Cancer’ programme was devised to improve outcomes for patients and support practitioners in taking the actions necessary to drive improved cancer survivorship outcomes whilst reducing the numbers of follow-up appointments. Wendi Abraham, Macmillan Patient Pathway Redesign Project Manager, has been invited to attend next meeting and update on progress across the network.

12.Research and Clinical Trials (14-1C-110f / 13-1C-110n)

The group discuss recruitment into clinical trials at each NSSG meeting, a report highlighting the current and proposed recruitment status of each MDT is prepared jointly by the Peninsula Cancer Research Network Delivery Manager and the Sub-Specialty Lead and presented to the group

The Peninsula is supported by:

Duncan Wheatley, Clinical Specialty Lead -

Julie Cunningham, Research Delivery Manager –

Jennifer Hicks, Administrator –

Emma Cattell, Subspecialty Lead –

The next NIHR Clinical Research Symposium entitled ‘Clinical Trials to Clinical Practice will be held on Friday 20th May 2016 at Taunton Conference Centre.
