Participants

The participants in this study were recruited through SONA. Participants are undergraduate students at UW-Madison that are currently enrolled in psych 202 and they receive 1 credit for their participation time.

Materials

The study utilizes qualtrics as an online surveying tool. In the narrative condition, the video used is a shortened version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Season 1 Episode 6. The imagined contact condition used a prompt focusing on meeting a black stranger for the first time. The counterstereotypical exemplar condition focused on thinking of an influential and powerful black individual. Outcome measures include: a thermometer scale of feelings towards different races/ethnic groups and other minority groups that ranges from 0-100 with 100 being extremely warm, a semantic differential scale with black people as the group in question, and basic background/demographic questions. Also, a series of think aloud questions ranging from basic questions to task specific questions is used as an outcome measure.

Design

The study is a between-subjects design. The independent variables are the different intervention types.

Procedure

Participants are taken to a private office room where they are given a consent form that has a unique 5-digit code on it that will be used to anonymously identify the files later. Once signing the consent form, participants sit down at a computer that has the qualtrics survey already pulled up. By starting the qualtrics survey, participants will automatically be assigned to one of 4 conditions (control, narrative, imagined contact, countersterotypical exemplar). The RA running the study will inform the participant that they will be there if they have any questions during the task. Participants will finish the task randomly assigned to them and then the survey will ask them a series of outcome measures and background questions. Once they are finished with the qualtrics portion of the study, they will inform the RA who will then ask them the think aloud questions. The RA will remind the participant that the answers will be recorded to be transcribed at a later time. The RA will ask the participant to read their unique code at the beginning of the recording. After the think aloud questions, the participant will be debriefed and thanked for their time.
