Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summertime fun in the sun and many wholesome activities with family and friends. The holiday has been set aside as a time to remember those who fell in battle in wars to protect our freedom to carry on our lives in peace. As Christians, we honor those who have made it possible for us sharing the gospel. I remember that my Mom had three brothers in WW2 who all came home injured but alive. We salute those who daily risks their lives for the many.

A Meaningful Life
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:3-4 ESV)
Viktor Frankl, was a psychiatrist as well as a neurologist. He survived the many atrocities that were daily dished out by the guards at the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp. He lost his wife and both parents in this imprisonment. In 1946, Frankl first published the book, Man’s Search for Meaning. This well written book chronicles his life as a prisoner of the Nazis. Here is one quote from his book:
“Ever more people today have the means to live, but no meaning to live for.”
God our Creator wants every person to joyfully pursue the ultimate meaningful goal of this life – eternal life in paradise.
(Galatians 5:26) – Paul reminds Christians that we are being led by the Spirit – so in order to achieve a life that is significant, we should live with an attitude of joy and peace toward all other people.
(Ephesians 5:21) – Demonstrate our reverential respect for Christ as Lord by the way we submit to one another. An attitude of service is the way of respect.
(Romans 12:10) We can acceptably “outdo our brother” is by shining the light of recognition on them –- on ourselves.
(1 John 4:7-8, 19-21) John the apostle writes in many places about what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. The most important manner of living as a Christian is to love as God loves. We cannot claim to love Jesus and hate or even dislike our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Are you “in Christ” today? If you are then let’s all work together to bring praise by our acts of kindness to one another an to our neighbors. If not in Christ, then obey him today. DB
