2010 Margret Comack Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership
PURPOSE
The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) is pleased to announce the 2010 Margret Comack Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership.
The Margret Comack Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership is designed to acknowledge outstanding leadership of an individual nurse in a senior leadership position (Vice President, Director, etc), who is employed in a member organization (hospitals, associates and affiliates) of the Ontario Hospital Association. The award will be presented at HealthAchieve2010 held November 8, 9 and 10, 2010in Toronto.
Many individuals across the industry exemplify leadership in health care. Nurses in senior leadership positions (Vice President, Director, etc) in Ontario health care settings provide a unique contribution of direct care experience, management ability and system thinking that leads to innovation and effectiveness at many levels in their organizations and associated communities.
CRITERIA
The winner demonstrates outstanding individual contribution in nursing leadership, whether they are in the early, middle or late stage of their career. The winner must meet the criteria below.
- Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse, Registered Nurse (Extended Class) or Registered Practical Nurse;
- Employed in a full-time senior leadership position (Vice President, Director, etc) in a member organization of the Ontario Hospital Association;
- Exemplifies qualities of leadership that are outstanding and that have produced innovative and effective results for staff, patients and the organization;
- Demonstrates a commitment and contribution to professional associations through membership and active participation;
- Demonstrates a commitment to the nursing profession through leadership in at least three(3)of the following five(5)categories: clinical practice, leadership, education, research and quality improvement activities;
- Recognized as an accomplished leader at the forefront of innovation in their community of peers and colleagues through awards, publications and other demonstrable achievements; and
- Contributes as a leader to effect broad change in health care services integration.

NOMINATION GUIDELINES
The nomination process is open to members (hospitals, associates and affiliates) of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA). Two colleagues who are employees of an OHA member organization nominate an individual for their outstanding contribution in nursing leadership. The nomination must include a completed nomination form and a brief summary of the nominee’s leadership in nursing. The brief summary must answer the following questions and demonstrate how the nominee meets the criteria highlighted on Page 1(maximum of 4 pages single spaced
- What contribution has this individual made and how did it demonstrate excellence in nursing leadership?
- What outcomes have been achieved as a result of this individual's leadership contribution?
- What was the impact on patients, staff and/or the organization?
NOTE: To facilitate an anonymous review process, please avoid the use of letterhead and minimize specific references to the nominee’s organization.
SELECTION PROCESS AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNER
The OHA’s Nursing Leadership Award Review Panel will use a blind review process to select an individual who will be honoured with the 2010 Margret Comack Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership. The nomination and supporting documentation must completely address the award criteria and answer the 3 questions listed above. The 2010 recipient will be notified in September and the award will be presented during HealthAchieve2010held November 8, 9 and 10 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
A profile of the winner will be submitted to the Canadian Journal of Nursing Leadership to provide exemplars of nurse leaders who make a difference through their professional contribution to health care in hospitals.
