Monthly Parent Tips:
How much sleep should your children be getting?
  • 3 to 6 years-Approximately 11-12 hours of sleep. Younger children of this group may still require a short nap during the day, but the need to nap usually diminishes by the time they enter the first grade.
  • 7 to 12 years-Children of these age groups tend to need about 10-12 hours of nightly sleep but often only get about 9-10 hours.
A Few Quick Tips for Getting Your Child Active!
  1. Limit time with electronics
  2. Lead By example when eating
  3. Establish a regular routine
  4. Make it fun and play with them
  5. Bring a Friend-exercise while building relationships and positive peer interactions
Building Readers at WHEMS
Make sure reading is part of your family’s everyday life.
  • Create reading rituals such as read-aloud at bedtime or trips to the library
  • Take books with you on errands
  • Take time to listen as your child reads aloud

Check out some WHEMS Student Writing:
Living conditions for immigrants in New York were terrible. In the text, it states, “A child once described her home as ‘a place so dark that it seemed as if there weren’t a sky’” (pg. 36). This shows that the houses that immigrants lived in weren’t really a good place to live in. This also shows that immigrants were having a terrible time trying to live in houses in New York. Overall, immigrants weren’t living in good and stable houses.
