The objective is to encourage authorship by members of the society.
Entrants must be members in good standing of the American Society of Military Comptrollers. Essays may not be previously published articles. Articles must be written on the current topic, which is "What initiatives should the new presidential administration emphasize in order to facilitate efforts by resource and financial managers at the base and installation level?" Duo or group authored essays will not be accepted.
Members may submit essays to their local chapters or directly to the National Awards Committee. Essays must be original, must never have been published and must not exceed 1,500 words. Essays must be typed, double spaced and submitted on plain bond paper. Include the essay and a short biography on CD, in MS Word or rich text format. Use only the official form shown on the following page for essay submissions. This form may be locally reproduced in the same size.
A selection panel, chaired by the National Awards Committee and assisted by the Armed Forces Comptroller Editorial Board Chairperson, will review all nominations received and make final recommendations to the ASMC National Executive Committee who will approve all final award winners. Essays will be judged for material organization (logical interpretation of the subject, adherence to topic), vocabulary and style (phrasing and continuity), grammar, punctuation, spelling, neatness, and adherence to essay competition rules (prepared in the proper format).Winners will be notified by May 1 by e-mail if they have been selected as a winner. Winners will also be posted on the ASMC website.
Winners of the Essay Award may have their essays published in the Armed Forces Comptroller magazine. Up to three winners will be selected. First place winner receives $750. Second place receives $500 and third place receives $250. All winners receive a plaque, presented at the ASMC Professional Development Institute (PDI).
The ASMC National Headquarters must receive entries by mail not later than February 28 to be considered by the selection panel. If February 28 falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deadline is the next business day. No exceptions to this deadline.
