Background
The North American Pediatric Renal Cooperative Study (NAPRTCS) was founded in 1987 and is an organization dedicated to research, education, and education in pediatric renal disease and transplantation. NAPRTCS in conjunction with Roche Pharmaceuticals is pleased to announce a research award for fellowship trainees in pediatric renal transplantation. The purpose of this award is to provide training to foster research in pediatric renal transplantation.
Award Granted
A research award of $40,000 will be granted to a single awardee for clinical or basic/bench based research in pediatric renal transplantation over a period of 1 year, from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006.
Applicant Qualifications
To be considered a candidate for the NAPRTCS – Roche Fellowship Research Award in Pediatric Renal Transplantation, an individual must:
- Be from a recognized fellowship program
- Be at a “fellowship training level” and cannot hold a faculty level position throughout the period of the award
- Hold a degree of MD, DO, PhD or its equivalent
- Be a citizen of the United States or Canada or have a J-1 or H-1 visa and be working in a certified United States or Canadian institution
- Be sponsored by a NAPRTCS PI from a center in good standing (see NAPRTCS website, for details)
Requirements
- The research project can be clinical, basic or translational targeted to pediatric renal transplantation
- The goals and objectives of the proposed research are to be accomplished within 1 year of the starting date of the research project
- Research funding received will be used to fund the research project (e.g., funds may be used to support salary and supplies directly related to the research project)
- If the amount of the award is insufficient to fund the project, applicant must provide documentation that additional funds are available for the successful completion of the project
Terms of the Research Award
- The NAPRTCS – Roche Fellowship Research Award in Pediatric Renal Transplantation will be given for a 1 year term for research projects conducted between July 1, 2005 and June 30, 2006.
- Awardees must submit at least a 3-page interim report due on January 1, 2006 and final research summary, a minimum of 7 pages, due on July 1, 2006.
- Indirect costs or tuition payments may not be deducted from this award.
- The award recipient may receive supplemental income in accordance with institutional policy.
Publications
- All abstracts and publications based on research performed during the period of this award must be reviewed and approved by NAPRTCS Participating Centers Committee prior to submission
- All publications and/or presentations based on research performed during the period of this award must acknowledge the award in the following manner, “with grant support from the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Study and Roche”.
Evaluation Criteria
- Applications will be reviewed and graded by the NAPRTCS-Roche Fellowship Award Committee which consists of doctors and researchers with expertise in pediatric renal transplantation. Each application will be assigned a primary and secondary reviewer familiar with the research area of the proposed. The strengths and weaknesses of the proposal will be evaluated in the following categories: 1) scientific merit/significance, 2) innovation, 3) methods and approach, 4) feasibility 5) relevancy to the advancement of research in pediatric renal transplantation, 6) investigator and environment. There is also an area on the form for each evaluator to add comments.
Information Required for Application: Must be received by May 1, 2005
- Completed application form
- A cover letter listing your name, the title of your research project, the name of the award you are applying for, the name of the sponsoring NAPRTCS PI from a Center in Good Standing, and your institution
- A letter of support from your Fellowship Director stating that you have the ability (time, budgetary and intellectual property releases) to carry out and successfully complete your proposed research project during the 1 year period of the award
- A letter of support from your Research Supervisor if different than the Fellowship Director
- A letter of support from the sponsoring NAPRTCS PI from a Center in Good Standing if that person is different from your Fellowship Director or Direct Research Supervisor
- A typed document responding to the following questions/areas:
- Vision for addressing one or more desired research goals as The NAPRTCS – Roche Fellowship Research Award in Pediatric Renal Transplantation recipient for 2005
- A statement of career goals by the applicant
- A current curriculum vitae
